John was always supportive of the program I started at Columbia High School (CAP - Columbia's Alternative Program) for at-risk youth. He was a key advocate working with me at budget sessions, meetings with central administration, and at school board presentations to expand the program by adding classes, more teachers, and more students who needed help. He was there, always, both as an assistant principal and then as the principal to support not only the program but also all the at-risk students in CAP.
We stayed in touch after my retirement and then his years later his retirement. When he moved south I sent him a chapter from a manuscript of a book I was writing, "Been There / Taught That (Memoir of an at-risk youth and his lifelong career teaching troubled teens)." The book was published in 2023 and is available on Amazon. I sent John a draft of one chapter because it was about a trip to NYC we took for me to receive a NYS English Teacher of the Year Award and the ceremony was at the Marriott Marquis in the city. John was behind me receiving that award. Readers of the book who have contacted me write that the chapter "with your principal in NYC is the funniest chapter" in the book.
One sure thing about John was that he could read people. He recognized those who cared about their students. For those educators his support was without limits. The world of education has just lost a special leader.

John was a strong man and a gentle man. Through his undying love and support of Cathy, he was part of the Comfortex family and legacy. John and his family are in our heart felt prayers.
