It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Salvatore Sencion Jr., who was born on April 30, 1953 and departed this world on January 21, 2025. John lived a fulfilling life marked by his passion for photography and swimming as well as his very special relationship with his siblings, standing by each other through all of life's ups and downs. This bond was a source of great strength and comfort for John, and he touched the hearts of many with his warm personality and loyalty.
John's journey in the world of swimming began with inspiration from his father who was the Pool Director at Jane Addams Center Hull House in the 1960's. During this time the foundation was set for John to follow in his father's footsteps. He became a certified lifeguard and instructor and helped continue his father's legacy even after his passing in 1987. The Jane Addams Center (JAC) Sharks swim team created by John Sr. began and flourished for many years and John Jr. continued until the untimely closing of Jane Addams Center.
In the 1990's, John worked at the Chicago South Swim Club and the Southside YMCA. His love for the sport and commitment to nurturing young talent was evident as he moved on to instruct at the New City YMCA from 2000 to 2004. He continued his instructing career at the Lakeshore Athletic Club and Chicago Indian Swim Club (Lane Tech High School) from 2004 to 2009. John's enthusiasm for swimming remained unwavering as he joined the Iguana's Swim Club from 2010 to 2025 and spent his summers from 2012 to 2023 at the Lincolnwood Lightning Swim Club. Over the many years he has touched the lives of hundreds of children and families.
Beyond the pool, John was a passionate Star Trek fan, loved Kung Fu movies, and had a deep appreciation for Oldies music. His eclectic taste reflected his vibrant and adventurous spirit. One of John's favorite pastimes was visiting the fabulous city of Las Vegas with his friends and loved ones, creating cherished memories filled with laughter and joy.
Family traditions held a special place in John's heart. He treasured making tamales on Christmas Eve and crafting the famous homemade Sencion Pizza, creating lasting bonds and memories with his family.
John's legacy is one of love, dedication, and passion. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in his journey.
Rest in peace, John Salvatore Sencion Jr. Your memory will forever be a source of inspiration and love.
