John Robert Senkewitz, age 79, passed away peacefully on February 20th, 2026, after a brief illness. Surrounded by family and friends, he will be remembered for the love he shared and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him. His legacy is reflected in the stories, smiles, and treasured memories shared by all who knew him. Born in
Tecumseh, Michigan, in 1946, John was the eldest of three brothers and grew up in the Manchester/Clinton area. He attended Clinton High School, where he was an active member of the school band and excelled in baseball and football, passions he passed on to his family. After high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving as a Vietnam Veteran. His love for aviation was evident through his work with the Strategic Air Command (SAC), primarily on KC & RC 135 Stratotankers and his favorite the B-52 Stratofortress. His military service took him from Kincheloe AFB in Michigan to Eielson AFB in Alaska. In 1967, John married Terry Ann Whiteman, his lifelong partner in crime. They initially lived in Sault Ste. Marie, a place dear to their hearts, before relocating to Alaska. During their time in Alaska, they welcomed their daughter Cathy in 1969. After completing his service in 1970, the family returned to Michigan, settling in Brooklyn. Their family grew with the arrival of son Mike in 1972, and their lives were filled with adventure and love. John was known for his dedication and work ethic, including his roles as a millwright and skilled tradesman. He played in several rock and roll bands over the years, including with his daughter Cathy who he taught to play. While John was an integral part of Cathy & Mike's sports adventures into adulthood, he was also a huge presence in the lives of their teammates. He was the guy with the camcorder at the games recording the memories, which he shared with others to cherish. John never met a stranger and his ability to see the best in any given situation was a constant presence. His genuine warmth and love of people meant he was quick with a hug and a smile and a reminder that "life is good" and to always "party on". He was also a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His survivors include his daughter Cathy, son Mike (Adonia), grandsons Jacob, Joshua, Ethan, and Adam, and his brother Brian, as well as extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Terry, his brother Stanley, and his parents John E. and Deloris Senkewitz. John's life was a testament to love, service, and family. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of sharing in his life. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will hold a Celebration of Life later this year, in the place he loved best. Arrangements with Purse Funeral Home. www.PurseFuneralHome.com
