John Harold Shafer passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024, just one day shy of his 75th birthday, in his hometown of Morgantown, WV, where his remarkable journey began on July 2, 1949. He has reunited with his beloved parents, Clarence Harold Shafer and Roberta Rae Kinsley Shafer, as well as his cherished brothers-in-law Kenny Sisler and Roger Boggess, in eternal rest.
John's life was a testament to love, hard work, and service. For 25 years, he navigated the routes of West Virginia as a heavy truck driver for Hope Gas, earning the respect and friendship of his colleagues and community. Even after retiring, John never stopped moving, dedicating himself to the welfare of others, embodying the true spirit of a helper and a giver.
A well-known figure in his church, John was a trustee and faithful member of Delmar Chapel Church, where his dedication to his faith and community shined brightly. He cultivated the land with as much passion and joy as he nurtured the bonds with his family and friends, finding solace and happiness in farming.
John's legacy is cherished and carried on by his beloved wife, Judy Ann Arnett Shafer; their loving daughters, Kim Drvar (Marty) and Rhonda Fox (Dale); his sons, Rich Armstrong (Chari) and Jeff Armstrong (Loria); his devoted siblings, Dixie Sisler, Joyce Boggess, Marvin Shafer (Merlene), and Brad Shafer (Jenny); and the little ones who brought immense joy to his life, his grandchildren, Denver Drvar, AJ Armstrong, Art Armstrong, Derek Armstrong, Josh Armstrong, Lisa Morris, Emily Morris, and Briana Casino, as well as eight great-grandchildren. His extended family, including numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, will miss his guiding presence and sage advice.
Those whose lives John touched remember him as the epitome of kindness. His generosity was boundless, his support unwavering, and his ability to spread joy was unparalleled. A hallmark of John's character was his gratitude, expressed in his special thanks to the dedicated team at Ruby Memorial Hospital – Dr. Brett, Dr. Mahaffy, Dr. Sabati, and Dr. Beette – for their care and compassion.
John's life was enriched by special friendships, including that of Stan Goldsmith, Don Carpenter, Roger Henry, and his brother Brad. Each one stood by him through thick and thin, sharing invaluable advice and moments of camaraderie. He was also grateful to his Farm Buddy, Jon Carline Sr. and Jr., who made his farming endeavors more fulfilling. Special thanks for Marvin for all the good times at McDonalds and Donnie Citgo and all the friends he met there.
John Shafer leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and community service. His memory will be treasured always, his impact forever felt, and his life continuously celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Delmar Chapel c/o Amber Gaines 352 Lower Hildebrand Rd. Morgantown, WV 26501.
Friends will be received at the McCulla Funeral Home on Friday July 5, 2024 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 10am to the 11am rejoicing celebration service with Pastors Ray Fluharty and Dewey Boyles officiating. Burial will follow at Shafer Cemetery.
