John Rogers Sims Jr. died on Friday, August 6, 2010.

Mr. Sims was born on April 10, 1924, in Redstar, West Virginia, and raised in Belle, West Virginia.

He graduated from Dupont High School in 1942 and signed up for the United States Army. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated from law school. He married Mary Frances Smith in 1951, and in 1952 his son, John R Sims III, was born. The family moved to Strasburg, Virginia, where Mr. Sims became the General Counsel for the First National Bank of Strasburg.

In 1954, the family moved to Falls Church when Mr. Sims accepted a position with O. Roy Chalk and DC Transit. In 1955, his daughter, Joyce Rebecca was born. Mr. Sims was known for his love of children and many were considered his "extended family."

Mr. Sims specialized in transportation law, primarily before the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was active in the Interstate Commerce Commission Practioners' Association, including two terms as President, throughout his career. John married Geraldine Bucklew in 1965 and moved to McLean and later Great Falls. After practicing transportation law for 40 years they began spending time semi-retired in Wintergreen, Virginia. Mr. Sims was one of the founding directors of Commonwealth Doctor's Hospital and Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. He was active in Rotary International where he had 50 years of perfect attendance. He was more recently active in the Rockfish Presbyterian Church.

He was pre-deceased by his brother, Charles; his first wife, Mary Frances; and second wife, Geraldine.

He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Rebecca; his son and daughter-in-law, John Roger III and Amy; and three grandchildren, Krista, Neil and his wife, Laura, and Rob; his sister-in-law, Nancy Sims; nieces, Toby and Elaine, and nephews, Michael and Phillip and their children.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church, 5016 Rockfish Valley Highway, Route 151, Nellysford, VA 22958. A reception will follow. here will be a private burial held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

The family is asking that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The ALS Association Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120 Penmarc Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27603.
