John L. Smiskol, 82, a resident of Grayslake, IL, passed away October 6, 2025, at his home. He was born December 8, 1942 in Chicago, IL to George and Minerva Smiskol.

John is survived by his loving companion Barbara Herek, his nieces and nephews Elise Matusek, Lori (Vince) Heywood, Jim Matusek, and Kristi (Dan) Rosen, and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Roberta Matusek.

John was a passionate world traveler, known for his love of skiing and exploring new places simply for the joy of it. Wherever you dreamed of going, John had likely been there—ready with stories, insights, and expert travel tips. Earlier in life, he made his mark in the rally car world, rising to the top of the national stage and earning respect throughout the sport.  He will surely be missed!

A visitation and funeral service are scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium 410 E. Belvidere Rd. Grayslake, IL 60030 from 11:00am until 1:00pm with the service commencing at 1:00pm. Interment will follow after the service at Avon Centre Cemetery in Grayslake, IL.
