John Franklin Smith, Jr., 85, of Golden Beach, Maryland, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to family. Born on August 9, 1939, in Washington, D.C., to the late John F. Smith, Sr. and Frances Smith (née McWilliams), John lived a life marked by integrity, patriotism, and quiet strength.
In his early years, John answered the call to serve his country with pride and honor as a member of the United States Army during his twenties. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to public service through a long and dedicated career with the United States Government.
John was a loving husband to Barbara L. Smith and a devoted father to his two sons: Mark A. Mann of West Virginia and John F. Smith III of Waldorf, Maryland. His greatest joy came from his family, which grew to include 12 beloved grandchildren and 9 cherished great-grandchildren.
Known for his steady presence, unwavering values, and warm sense of humor, John was a respected figure in his community and a source of wisdom and support to all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and the love he shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a veterans' organization of your choice in honor of John's life of service.
Condolences may be made to the family at www.brinsfieldfuneral.com.
