John "Johnny" Spain

John "Johnny" Spain of Wynne, Arkansas, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was born on March 1, 1936, in Wynne, to Robert Eugene Spain and Nellie Jane (Searcy) Spain. He grew up in Cross County and in his youth played baseball for the Hamlin Dirty Socks. A proud 1955 graduate of Wynne High School, Johnny married the love of his life, Anita Freshour, in 1958.
Johnny spent his life working the land he loved, farming rice and soybeans in Cross County alongside his son, Keith. When the season's work was done, he could be found in the deer woods, where he felt most at home. He was a hard worker, a loyal friend, and happiest with family nearby and fields under an open Arkansas sky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard Spain; and his wife, Anita Spain.
He is survived by his children, William Keith Spain (Lelia) and Karen McKnight (Dan) both of Wynne; grandchildren, Lana Ampueda (Allen), Sara "Lizzie" Organ (Brandon), Rachael McKnight, Lexie Busick (Brian), and Zachary McKnight; and five great-grandchildren.
Johnny's family is grateful for the many friends and neighbors who shared in his life and his work. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm at Kernodle Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 12 pm with Rev. Dustin Clegg officiating. Burial will be in McElroy Cemetery.
