John William Sperber passed away at the age of 88 with family at his daughter's home in Murray, Utah. Born and raised in central and eastern Washington State, since 1960 he also had strong ties through marriage to Minoa and later Kirkville, NY.
In 1952 John joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the Submarine Service 20+ years, retiring as Sr Chief Petty Officer. He then worked 20 years as a civilian at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, WA, overseeing maintenance, upgrading, and decommissioning of nuclear-powered submarines and other vessels.
In 1960 John married Linda Mae Rising Sperber, who was from Minoa, NY. They were married just short of 50 years before Linda passed in 2010. They liked to camp, fish, boat, garden, support their children's activities, travel, go to casinos, and play cards with friends. They lived in Port Orchard, WA. They had two children, John Lee Sperber and Kimberly Jo Trupiano. They had three grandchildren: Hannah Sperber, August Trupiano, and Sierra Trupiano.
John remarried in 2015 to Joyce Kay Wells Sperber. They lived in Kirkville, NY. They had been long-time friends who were reunited after losing their spouses. Their love of travel and casinos brought them together. They also liked to camp and play cards with friends. John had four step-children: Chris Wells, Joni Pickering and husband Dennis, Lynn DiFlorio and husband Vincent, and Steven Wells and wife Amy. He had many step-grandchildren: by Chris– Timothy Wells, Jessica Wilson, Stacey Wells, Erik Ellefson, and Karina Wells; by Joni– Ryan Wells, Jeffry DuSell, Collin DuSell; by Lynn– Brooke DiFlorio; and by Steven– Ava Wells.
John is survived by his spouse, Joyce; his children, John and Kimberly; his grandchildren; his step-children, Chris, Joni, Lynn, and Steven; and his step-grandchildren.
John was reticent and wise, but he also liked to laugh and kid. He observed much more than he let on. He liked people to get along and was generally kind-hearted. He took care of his family and was very loyal. He will be greatly missed.
John's daughter, Kimberly, and his two grandchildren, August and Sierra, are holding a Celebration of Life Memorial Sept. 6-7, 2025. Per John's and Linda's wishes, the Memorial will take place in a special area in the Cascade Mountains, WA, where the family will be releasing both of their ashes together, along with those of John's mother, Lucille McDonald.
