John Paul Stephens Sr. 84, passed away peacefully on Friday February 20, 2026 surrounded by his loving family at his residence. Born on February 10, 1942, in
Lucasville, Ohio, John was the cherished son of the late Clyde and Clara Stephens. His life was a testament to the values of education, community service, and family.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Stephens and Jim Stephens.
John's academic journey led him to the University of Kentucky, where he not only excelled in his studies but also inspired many as a graduate assistant football coach at Eastern Kentucky University. His passion for education and leadership seamlessly transitioned into a distinguished career as the Superintendent of the Raceland School System. Prior to his retirement, John also served with distinction as the principal of the same institution. His dedication to education and the arts was immortalized in the John P. Stephens Arts Building, a facility named in his honor that continues to nurture the talents of young minds.
Outside the sphere of education, John was an avid golfer, a devoted fan of UK sports, and a man whose heart was firmly rooted in the Raceland School System and its athletic programs. His love for these institutions was matched only by his love for his grandchildren, with whom he shared countless joyous moments. John's commitment to lifelong learning and personal growth was evident in his annual retreats with former school board members, where he engaged in thoughtful discussions and cherished camaraderie.
A man of faith, John was a dedicated member of the McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, Florida, where he spent his winters basking in the warmth of the community and enjoying his residence at the Seven Lakes.
John's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Sandee Smith Stephens, and their vibrant family. He was a proud father to John Paul (Tammy) Stephens, Jr. of Richmond, VA, Adam (Catherine) Stephens of
Lexington, KY, Noah (Ling) Stephens of Texas, and Jeff (Natalie) Klaiber of Mechanicsville, VA , as well as a nurturing figure to his daughters, Martha Stephens of Minnesota, Beth (Gene) Osborn of Bellefonte, KY, and Shannon (Timothy) Hart of
Ashland, KY. His brothers, Phillip Stephens Flatwoods, KY, Steve Stephens of Flatwoods, KY, and Tom (Linda) Stephens of Russell, KY, one sister, Ann Grizzle of Russell, KY will remember him fondly, as will his eight adoring grandchildren: Justin Butler, Brady Keeran, Lydia Klaiber, Grace Osborn, John Paul Stephens III, Charlotte Stephens, Robert Stephens, and Samuel Stephens. John's life was further enriched by their love and the unique joy each grandchild brought to his world.
The Stephens family is united in grief yet comforted by the many cherished memories they hold. John's influence extends beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of students, colleagues, and friends throughout his remarkable life.
Funeral services to celebrate John's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the STEEN FUNERAL HOME, 13th STREET CHAPEL, officiated by his grandson, Rev. Justin Butler. John will be laid to rest at the Floyd Cemetery, where his legacy will be honored by all those he touched. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
