Dr. John S. Stevens, Jr., D.O., 78, of Lower Macungie Twp. passed away June 2, 2024. Born in Allentown he was the son of the late John S. Stevens, Sr. and Mary "Mame" (Onusconich) Stevens. John was a 1963 graduate of Dieruff High School, a 1968 graduate of Temple University School of Pharmacy, and a 1973 Graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Allentown.
Our dad
Ironic that Dad died with his heart giving out. But we feel it's because he lived with heart-with passion for his patients and practice, the Temple Owls basketball team, his handball buddies, his dogs, stories about the Sixth Ward, pinochle playing, his Dieruff days, tales of the Temple Phi Delt fraternity, starring in undergraduate musicals like Funny Girl and how it took him the entire production time to grow a mustache, eating delicacies like halupkis and pierogies, his faith, supporting the Phillies and Eagles, singing in the alumni choir, steam baths at the Y, tennis time, devouring novels, and laughing out loud to movies like Young Frankenstein and Animal House.
He was part of the Inaugural Class of the Dieruff Alumni Wall of Fame. He was Chief of Staff of the Allentown Osteopathic Hospital (now St. Luke's). He was a member of the FACOG Certifying Board. He was on the Board of the Allentown School District Foundation. He was also on the board of the Lehigh County Mental Health Assoc.
Most importantly he loved to laugh and make others laugh. His greatest joy truly was his family. He always said his heart swelled with pride when thinking and talking about us, his parents and sister, his nieces and nephews, his grandchildren, and his rock-our mom, his loving wife of 55 years.

The service yesterday was amazing; there were so many people there. It was the longest funeral procession of cars that I've ever seen. Police cars at every intersection. The dinner afterwards at Iron Lakes Country Club was over the top. Anita and her family pulled everything together so perfectly, and I know that John was watching down and was very pleased. What a great tribute to a wonderful man.

Scholar, athlete, gentleman - that´s what Dr. John represented. He was a modern day renaissance man - he touched so many lives and made them better. I am saddened by his loss. My sincerest condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Condolences to Dr. John Stevens family. He was a leader in his medical profession and in service to the community. I had the honor of being a teammate of the lefty pitcher on the Dieruff Baseball Team.
Count your blessings if this man has touched your life.

To Anita and family,
It is with a heavy heart that we learned of John's untimely passing. We were lucky enough to first meet John in our classrooms at Dieruff. What a joy as a student! Always enthusiastic, always prepared, always willing to help wherever needed. His kindness, his generous spirit are unmatched. We are privileged to know him as an adult, respected in his chosen field of medicine, loved by those whose lives he has touched. We share your sadness but know that wonderful memories will sustain you in the coming days.

With our love and sympathy,
Pete & Sandy Carpenter

Stevens Family,
There is not a more caring sole then Dr.Stevens. Was my GYN for many years, delivered my daughter on Mothers Day , many years ago. Loved talking to him at the Dieruff Reunions, always took time to catch up. He will surely be missed. Hope he´s having a cold one with my husband and all his friends up above.
Heaven had another Angel.

Dear Stevens Family,
Dr. Stevens was there to deliver me when I was born and then he was there to deliver my daughter. It was a sad day when he told me that he was retiring, and I would have to pick someone else to be my doctor, but I always trusted his advice. He was an amazing human being and knew exactly what to say and how to say it. He knew how to joke but he also knew how to make you feel as comfortable as he could, even if he always seemed to have students with him. I am sorry for not only his family's loss but also for all of his employees through the years and his patients. His memory will live on through all the faces of the children that he was there for the birth of.

He delivered my daughter and my three grandchildren. Dr Steven´s was the best. Kind, gentle, understanding. He put a smile on my face every time I saw him. I was his patient from the beginning until he retired.

After John became a doctor we were at a family wedding and Uncle Steve thought he would get some free medical advice. Uncle Steve told John that when he raised is arm high he got a pain in the side. He asked John what he could do about it. John said, "don´t raise your arm up like that"! Still makes me chuckle when I think about it. He was a great cousin with a fantastic sense of humor.

To the entire Stevens family - my sincerest sympathy to you all! Dr. Stevens was my OB-GYN for many years, and by far the most incredible, caring, and loving doctor I have ever had. He was by my side before and during my high-risk pregnancy, offering mental/physical support and cheering me on like I was his only patient. Such an awesome heart - and he shared that with all of his patients. He brought my twins into this world - the brightest lights in my life - and has always had a very special place in my heart/life. I always sent Christmas cards every year to keep him posted on my twins' growth, and he always responded. What a blessing this man was to me! Heaven has gained a beautiful soul. Praying that God will embrace his family with strength and love through this and for all days to come.
