John Edward Stickles Sr. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the age of 73. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he was the son of Edward and Phyllis Stickles.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter, Virginia Ann Newbill. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joanne Stickles, and their son, John Edward Stickles Jr.

John grew up in Newport News and graduated from Warwick High School. He attended Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, where he studied woodworking, and later joined the City of Newport News, working in Public Works for 30 years before retiring. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and dependability throughout his career.

After retirement, John enjoyed a multitude of activities. He loved nature and took great pride in his vegetable garden. He found joy in being outdoors, camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He especially cherished his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, treasuring the time spent with them.

John had a deep love for his God, his family, his friends, his church, and his country. He believed in helping others along their journey through life, and his legacy of kindness, faith, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
