John Swaney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Teeters' Funeral Chapel (a.k.a. Teeters' East Chapel) on Feb. 13, 2026.
John Boone Swaney (September 4,1941 - January 29, 2026)

John Boone Swaney, 84, of Hawley, PA passed away the evening of January 29, 2026.

John was born September 4, 1941, to Rutherford and Virginia Swaney of Plainfield, NJ. He and his brother, William (1937-2012), grew up in Plainfield and eventually attended Rider College. John earned his degree in Finance and worked in Healthcare Administration at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ for the bulk of his career.

John married his wife, Cheryl (1945-2015), on May 20, 1967. They spent most of their married years as residents of Brielle, NJ, where they raised their two children, Debra and Keith. In 1999, they relocated to Hawley, PA, where they enjoyed outdoor activities, spending time with their children and grandchildren, and participating in numerous church activities at the First Presbyterian Church of Hawley.

John's life was typified by physical activity. As a child, he enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and as he aged he was always active. Favorite pastimes included workouts at the gym, hiking, kayaking, and most of all working in his yard and gardens.

He is remembered for his ability to listen without judgement, his gentle but assertive ways, and most of all his ability to engage with people of all different backgrounds. He had a quiet, patient, happy, and peaceful energy. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family with his ability to creatively share thoughtful stories and memories.

John's ashes were interred in the columbarium at the First Presbyterian Church of Hawley on Sunday, February 8th, next to his beloved wife. He is survived by his daughter, Debra C. Swaney, son and daughter-in-law, Keith J. and Lisa M. Swaney, grandchildren: Nicole A. Parziale, Michael J. Parziale, Danielle R. Parziale, Jake P. Ramos, Abigail M. Swaney, Nathan J. Swaney, and Justine C. Swaney, and one great grandchild: Loretta Pearl Donovan.

A Celebration of Life will occur on April 11th at 1:00 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hawley in Hawley, PA.
