John Tanksley Obituary
John "Jack" A. Tanksley, Jr., a man of remarkable talent and boundless charisma, peacefully passed away on November 10, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 76. Born on February 2, 1949, in Miami, Florida, Jack led a life filled with adventure and creativity.
Jack's early life was marked by his athletic prowess, playing basketball at Miami Palmetto High School and later at the University of Florida. His love for the game took him across the Atlantic, where he played professionally on a team in Germany. His time at the University of Florida was cut short when he answered the call of duty and left to serve in the US Army.
After returning from his service, Jack embarked on a diverse and dynamic career. He owned a successful landscaping business and managed the beloved Strudel Haus restaurant in Helen, Georgia, as well as the Fork and Cork in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. He delighted friends and family with his culinary expertise as a personal chef on his own specializing in Asian cuisine. His artistic flair also shone through in his work as a graphic and web designer. Notably, Jack served as vice president of Fetzer Winery in Hopland, California, where he made significant contributions to the wine industry.
Jack was not only a man of professional accomplishments but also one of great personal charm. His talent as a storyteller, coupled with his quick wit and sense of humor, endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. An avid supporter of youth sports, he coached his daughter's teams, inspiring young athletes with his guidance and encouragement.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, John A. and Katharine Einfeldt Tanksley, Jack leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Bossert; cherished daughter, Maryn Welham, and her husband Zac; adored granddaughter, Ellerie; beloved sister, Frances Sweeney, and her husband Michael; and his loyal fur baby, a Labradoodle named Missy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Long Leaf Park, 314 Pine Grove Dr, Wilmington, NC 28409, Pavilion #2. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the memory of a truly extraordinary man whose life touched so many. Jack will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, compassionate heart, and the joy he brought into the lives of those around him.
