Julius "Al" Alvin Hendrix

Julius Alvin "Al" Hendrix, 92, passed away on November 10, 2025, in Ocala, FL with his daughter, Julie, by his side. A lifelong Floridian, Al was born on March 30, 1933, in McIntosh, FL, where he would later build a life rooted in community, historical curiosity, and care.

After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Al earned his pharmacy degree from the University of Florida and went on to serve his hometown as a dedicated pharmacist. He owned and operated his pharmacy in McIntosh for many years, becoming a trusted figure to generations of residents who relied on his knowledge and compassion. His commitment to health and well-being extended beyond prescriptions—he offered a listening ear and steady presence to all who walked through his doors.

Outside of his professional life, Al was a spirited Gator football and basketball fan, and he was an avid fisherman who found joy and peace on the water. He shared those loves with his daughter and strove to be the best father that he could be. In his younger years he had an even greater love for river diving, exploring Florida’s waterways in search of artifacts and fossils—a pursuit that reflected his lifelong fascination with history and the natural world. As an amateur archaeologist and one of the original Florida river divers, he spent countless hours studying the past beneath the surface of rivers and creeks, discovering and collecting pieces of history that connected him to earlier times. In his later years he donated a majority of his collection to the Silver River Museum and was thrilled that his passion would live on to be enjoyed by the public, studied by scholars, and used to educate countless Marion County school groups about Florida’s history.

Al was preceded in death by his wife, Juliet Yee Hendrix, parents, Winston and LaRue Hendrix, and sisters, Helen Lindsey, Jeanne Ziegler, and Meris Ann Calicchio.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Hendrix, and his sister, Sara Eastman.

In keeping with Al’s wishes, no public funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring his memory may be made to The Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center.
