John Joseph Vidimos, a man who packed more laughter and adventure into his 66 years than most could dream of, has taken his final bow on January 25, 2024. Known affectionately as John, he was a Chicago native through and through, right from his grand entrance on September 14, 1957, to his curtain call in the same vibrant city.
John's story is one full of characters and plot twists, with his earliest chapters being shared with his late parents, Frank Vidimos and Bernice Anders (and step-dad Stan), and his brother Jim Vidimos, and his beloved daughter, Madison, who all preceded him in their final acts. His supporting cast includes his brothers, Frank and Ed (Pat) Vidimos, and his step-sister, Laura (Jim) Bohling, and step-daughter, Desiree Franco, along with a lively ensemble of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was a proud graduate of Lake Central High School in St. John, Indiana. Ever the student, John turned his sights to Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, where he learned the ins and outs of AutoCad, a skill that would serve him well throughout his industrious life.
Not one to sit still, John became the entrepreneurial spirit of Florida, running his own printing company like a scene from a sitcom about sunny shenanigans. Upon his return to his roots, he took the helm of ACME Painting and Drywall. It's safe to say that John knew his way around both a printing press and a paint roller.
When he wasn't busy leaving his mark on the walls of the Midwest, John was an aficionado of the beach, embracing both the Floridian sun and the Chicagoan sand. He would often say that the only thing better than the sound of waves was the roar of a crowd at a White Sox game, though he'd sometimes cross enemy lines to catch the Cubs in action - if only to cheer for the visiting team.
John's love of competition wasn't just limited baseball; he was also a die-hard fan of Da Bears and the Blackhawks. For many years of his life, he could be found playing hockey himself from high school to way past his prime. In fact, his crowning achievement was founding the Lake Central High School Hockey Club. His commitment to the club was so fierce you'd think he was guarding the goal rather than the legacy.
John was the quintessential handyman, blessed with the kind of friendly demeanor that made you feel like you were the star of the show. His sense of humor was the sort that could defuse any situation, often leaving people wondering if they'd missed the joke or if they were part of it.
Few could light up a room with laughter quite like John. Whether he was tinkering with his train sets or challenging someone to a race around his electric slot car track, he always knew how to engineer a good time.
While John's final act was against an opponent he couldn't outwit – liver cancer – he faced it with the kind of bravery that would make any superhero envious. In true John fashion, he left us not with a somber adieu but a catalogue of funny memories and the reminder to cheer a little louder, laugh a little harder, and live with the gusto of a founding member of a high school hockey club.
John Joseph Vidimos, the man, the myth, the ultimate handyman, and friend, will be remembered not for his exit but for the indelible mark he left on the lives of those he met. The stage of life may be a little dimmer without his light, but the memories he created will continue to shine bright in the hearts of those he touched. Curtain down, applause up for a life well lived and a man dearly missed.

I have wonderful memories of playing basketball and street hockey with John and his brothers, and building a DIY hockey goal in the basement at his house was a hilarious learning experience. I won't forget all the fun we had together.

John was a good friend and a stellar human being who I have had the pleasure of knowing for over four decades. His kind and calm demeanor and easy laughter always put me at ease, and I am grateful for his friendship. May his spirit live on in the many lives he touched throughout his 66 years. My own life is richer for having known him. I will miss you, John. Fare thee well, my friend.
