John Bernard Wingate, 87, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2022, in the presence of his loving family. He was born on January 4, 1935, in Toledo to his late parents, Cloyd and Elizabeth (McFadden) Wingate where he grew up alongside his twin brother.
John graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1953 before going on to meet his future wife, Mary Ann, on a blind date that was set up by his best friend. They married in 1959 and raised three children together. Two years after graduating, John enlisted in the military where he served two years in the Navy and three in the Air Force. He founded a flying club in the Air Force and was a proud aircraft mechanic who was trained on B-52 and F-102 fighter jets. During his service, he was blessed to have survived a helicopter crash along with his other comrades. His mechanic background propelled his future career upon his military release in 1959 where he became self-employed for his business, Wingate Business Machines. He was a trustworthy businessman and was very proud of his ability to provide for his family. Amid his whole career, he held dear to him the fact that at one point, he was able to provide a talking cash register to the visually impaired.
When he had down time, John enjoyed maintaining his house and his landscape. He was a handyman with a touch of perfectionist in him who, at the end of the day, wanted things to be done his way-especially when it came to tasks around the house like painting and loading the dishwasher. John was a great father who worked very hard to provide for his family. He gave his children many great opportunities and always prioritized their yearly summer family vacation, regardless of where they went. His wife and children were the most important part of his life. He was affectionately known by his children as a little high maintenance, but he was incredibly personable, smart, and talkative to all who knew him. John was a faithful Catholic and parishioner of Gesu Catholic Church for a total of 56 years and running who was loved by his parish community. He was a gentle grandpa who admired all his grand and great-grandchildren so much, and he will be missed dearly by all of his family members and friends.
John is survived by his children, Michael (Tracie) Wingate, Diane Yost (Jeff Jordan); brother, Jim (Rita) Wingate; grandchildren, Tiffanie Wingate, Timothy Wingate (Sierra Lisk), Lindsey Yost, Christopher Yost; great-grandchildren, Callie Wingate, Colten Wingate, Emilia Wingate; and many other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Wingate; son, Gregory Wingate.
Friends and family are invited to John's visitation at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W Sylvania Ave., Toledo, on Sunday, October 16, 2022, from 2-5 p.m, with a Scripture Service starting at 4:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, October 17, 2022, at Gesu Catholic Church at 1 p.m. A funeral procession to Toledo Memorial Park will follow where military honors will be performed at the graveside.
