John Wolfinger Obituary

WOLFINGER, John

William

John Wolfinger, 82 of Atlanta, GA passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on July 19, 2025 after a long illness.

Born on April 30, 1943, to John William (Bill) and Mary Kay (Pearson) Wolfinger, John grew up in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1961 and Bowling Green State University in 1965.

John spent his whole career in retail, first as a buyer for Rich's here in Atlanta and later for Richway Discount Department Store (a division of Rich's). At one time he was offered the chance to make the move to Macy's in New York City, but chose to stay in Atlanta, which had become his home. In the 1980s he opened his own shop, Intown Crafters, in Virginia-Highland which he ran until his retirement.

Following retirement John had a second career as a full-time volunteer. Largely focused on community safety, he volunteered with the Fulton County District Attorney's Office as a CourtWatcher and served as safety chair for the Virginia-Highland Civic Association and Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU-F). He also served on the boards of the Virginia-Highland Civic Association, Virginia-Highland Security Patrol, and Keep Atlanta Beautiful.

During this time John was the recipient of numerous awards including the APAB Neighborhoods Matter Award, Outstanding Citizen CourtWatcher for 2010 and 2016, Atlanta Police Department Citizen of the year for 2013, and the Virginia-Highland Civic Association Service Award for 2007. John also completed the citizen's academy programs for Atlanta Police Department, Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and Fulton County Sheriff's Department.

John was an active member of the Georgia Perennial Plant Society and maintained a beautiful garden at his home. He also was passionate about his family genealogy and was the keeper of the family tree, photos and history. One of his final projects was to organize the materials he had collected to hand off to the next generation.

John is survived by his cousins, Rob Planisek (Laura), Bonnie Bell, and Corey Van Hassel (James); sister-in-law, Sandra Wolfinger; nieces, Tara Lyn Wolfinger and Amanda Sue Hasenoehrl (Mike); and many close friends.

He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Kay (Pearson); father, John William (Bill) Wolfinger; brother, James (Jim) Wolfinger; and a nephew, Jared Wolfinger.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Internment will be at Rivercliff Cemetery in Mt. Gilead. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the organizations that were close to John's heart.

Not sure what to say?

Quite by accident, I found out that John had passed away in June. I am so sorry not to have been able to say goodby! For me as I became involved in city issues, John was my mentor!! I could be sure he knew how I could get something done!! At his 80th birthday party, I wrote, "You are important to me!" on his photo poster. John certainly touched my life and I am grateful for his friendship. May his memory be for a blessing!

John was a long-time client who became a good friend. He was unique, no question about it! I will miss him greatly.

John was the first neighbor to introduce himself to me when I moved a block over from him about 20 years ago. He kept us all up to date on the neighborhood news and safety information. He was always so kind and helpful.

Also, I've always enjoyed walking by his garden, especially down the alley next to his house to peek at the clever design he created in the back. We neighbors will certainly feel the loss of this fine man.

We will miss John on Vance Avenue. He kept us all updated and connected. He was a kind and generous man and always one of our favorite houses to stop at on Halloween.

I met John through the VH Civic Association way back when we had the Barbq on the "highway land". I used to go to Intown Crafters for John to make beautiful bows whenever I need one the a wreath at Christmas or any other occasion. He had notions that we were able to buy in our neighborhood.
Sad day for us when he retired. I always kept in touch with John through the years just around the hood.

I participated in the CERT program with John after 911. Unfortunately I had not seen him much since then, but whenever I heard his name, I pictured his beautiful smile.

John will always be remembered fondly.

I only knew John as a generous, resourceful, very active community leader who despite not knowing me well always made me feel like a valued member of the community. I will remember him always, miss him tremendously and regret not seeking the chance to be his friend.

John was a gentle soul and wonderful client of many years. I will miss visiting him in his home, talking with him, working with him and hearing his kind voice. He was a friend and a neighbor. We need more like him in this world.

Oh, John. You will be greatly missed. I am grateful for the few years we were able to work together at Keep Atlanta Beautiful. It didn´t take long for me to know that I was in the presence of a beautiful soul who just wanted to love and support your neighbors. You were one of the first in line to jump in and offer your support when you learned my son was going through his bone marrow transplant & I hold your graciousness close to my heart. Rest Easy, John. Prayers to those that are mourning your loss.

I am so sorry to hear this. Now I understand why he has been on my mind the last couple of days. We were not close friends. But, I valued him as a neighbor and for all he did for the community. And, we shared a birth day. Not the year, but the day.

So sorry to hear of John's passing. Had talked with him last week but knew that he was in hospice care. We had been friends since November of 1966. He was a groomsman in our wedding in 1969. Sue and I will surely miss his friendship
