John L. Wright, a man of humbling courage and boundless generosity, left this world on January 30, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on May 4, 1940, John's life was marked by an enduring love for his family, a passion for life's simple pleasures, and a legacy of service that touched many lives. He passed away peacefully in McHenry, surrounded and comforted by his caring family.
John's journey began as the beloved son of his late parents, Chauncey and Eleanor Wright. He became a cherished brother to Bill (Charnelle), Dick (Helen), and Sara (Howard). He was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty and Janet, whose memories he held close to his heart. The love story of a lifetime began when he married Shirley Jager on November 16, 1963, in McHenry, where they built a wonderful, rich life together filled with laughter and joy. They raised a beautiful family, including their children Gay (Mike), JR (Christine), and Joy (Tom), and were blessed with the gift of grandchildren: Zach (Kevin), Christopher (Allyson), Josh, Jordyn, Mary Kate (Ryan), Jacob, Tess, Jared, George, and Bella. The circle of love expanded with the arrival of his great-granddaughter, Charley. He loved every one of these family members with a steady and enduring strength; often expressed more comfortably in kind and generous actions than in words.
John honorably served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, where he proudly fulfilled his duty to his country. Upon returning home, he continued his life of service, dedicating over 25 years to the Evanston Fire Department, where his bravery, leadership, and commitment to helping others were evident in his rise to the rank of Captain. His colleagues remember him not just for his heroic acts but also for his camaraderie and unwavering support.
Outside of his work, John was a man of many interests and talents. His hands built not just one, but two family homes. John enjoyed the company of his closest friends while fishing on one of his favorite lakes, the thrill of sailing, the freedom of the open road on his Harley, or just hanging out enjoying a "cold one" with his buddies in his garage in Wonder Lake.
He spent many years as a snowbird enjoying the Florida sun and his friends while poolside. His condo in Florida was a haven of peace and a place where he and Shirley created countless cherished memories. John's spirit of helpfulness was always present; he was the one his neighbors and friends knew they could count on, no matter what the circumstances he was always ready to lend his skills to friends in need.
John's television preferences were clear-he was a fan of 'Gunsmoke,' 'Wheel of Fortune,' and 'Family Feud,' with a firm rule that commercials must always be muted. His kind soul extended to all living creatures, as he lovingly watched over his pepper plants, devising ways to outsmart the squirrels and other critters that sought to share in his harvest.
John L. Wright's life was a testament to the importance of family, the power of generosity, and the impact one person can have on the world around them. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Though he may be gone from our sight, John will forever remain in our hearts.
