Johnie Reeves Obituary
Published by Legacy on Jul. 20, 2025.
Johnie Clyde Reeves of Richland Springs passed away peacefully at his home on July 19, 2025, with his loving wife and daughters by his side following a valiant, two year battle with an aggressive form of colon cancer. Johnie was born in San Saba to Novalene and Harvey Reeves on December 29, 1946. He grew up the quintessential country boy-hunting, fishing, and enjoying "God's country" as he called his home. He grew up a hard worker, helping around his family's farm with the animals and working on the tractors with his daddy. He graduated from San Saba High School in 1965, and he was the first in his family to attend college at his beloved alma mater, Texas A&M. During college, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Lynn Whitley. They married in 1968 in San Saba, and they were blessed with four daughters. Daddy was a true family man, and he always made time for play, emergency doll/jewelry repair, bike rides, and bedtime stories. Mr. Reeves was a professional educator, and when his girls were still small, he went back to school in the evenings after long hard workdays for Richland Springs ISD to obtain his masters degree in education and mid management/superintendency certificates. As his family grew with sons in law and his precious grandchildren, he was a dedicated and connected pawpaw, and his babies brought him so much love and joy.Mr. Reeves dedicated his life to public service, not only as an educator and administrator, but also as a city council member and elected official. He served as the mayor of his beloved Richland Springs from 2019 to 2023, and in 2024 he was named Citizen of the Year for his work to clean up the town and obtain grant funding to replace and repair the aging water lines. He was truly a jack of many trades-rancher, mechanic, knowledgeable and talented outdoorsman, devoted Aggie, and musician. He was known for his strong, beautiful, voice, and his family will cherish recordings of his performances. As an adult he taught himself to play the guitar and even picked up the fiddle for a time from his dear friend James Scott before they just started having too much fun playing music together to fool with lessons. He volunteered playing music weekly at the nursing home with his bandmates for many years and frequently lead music at church. A devoted man of God, Mr. Reeves taught Sunday school and Bible Study regularly throughout his illness, even just weeks ago. He served as a deacon for his church, the First Baptist Church of Richland Springs, and held many leadership positions. He also served on the San Saba Soil and Water Conservation District Board for the last many years, and he proudly served as a Gideon as well.Throughout his life, Mr. Reeves was a faithful and steadfast witness to God's unwavering love for us all. He would go out of his way for others, even and sometimes especially strangers. He often told his girls you never know what kind of an impact you might make on someone with a smile and a hello. Throughout his battle with cancer, many times he prayed with others, witnessed to others, and glorified God by counting his blessings, even as he endured infusions and radiation. He committed to fighting the good fight with everything in him, and he did, and continues to do so from heaven. We told him his body just could not keep up with him any longer so Jesus called him home to continue his work from above. We are forever grateful to have been his and are comforted by the fact that we will see his blue eyes, hear his precious voice and feel his warm embrace again someday in the presence of God. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Margaret Lynn (Whitley) Reeves, his daughters Tamara Reeves (daughters Bailey Williams and Madalynn Long); Dana Porter (husband Rick, sons Lynden and Myles); Johnna Frederick (husband Mark, daughter Vaughn, sons Marlow and Vander); and Shanna Washer (husband Will, son Whit and daughter Wynslow). He is also survived by four great grandchildren, his brothers Gary (Gayle) and Mike, and sister Brenda Finlayson (Kevin), brothers in law Ingram and Frank Whitley, and sister in law Julia Harrell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, many cousins, and countless dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents in law (Alfreda and Arthur Whitley), his dear cousins Henry Reeves and Gerald McKee, and his nephew Benjamin Harrell. The family would like to extend their gratitude to St. David's Hospital in Georgetown for their loving care and their help in bringing him home, Texas Oncology in Marble Falls, and his numerous friends and prayer warriors.
