Johnny Brost Obituary

Visit the Adams Mason Funeral Home & Crematory - Akron website to view the full obituary.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Johnny Grayson Brost, a man of extraordinary resilience and courage, who passed away due to complications of Agent Orange. A poignant story unfolds for many Vietnam veterans, one being my father, Johnny G Brost, echoing the experience of "Agent Orange" victim, a hero let down by the very government he served. Exposed to the toxic defoliant during his courageous service, he, like countless others, returned home to face a silent enemy: debilitating illnesses. Despite the undeniable link between Agent Orange and his deteriorating health, the fight for recognition and adequate healthcare was an uphill battle. Years of tireless advocacy and medical struggles often preceded any form of governmental acknowledgment or comprehensive support, a testament to the profound challenges faced by those who sacrificed so much.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Rae Brost.

Born on October20th, 1948, Johnny's early life was marked by tragedy. At the tender age of five, he was orphaned after the senseless murder of his mother by his father, forcing him to navigate a challenging world far too soon. Despite this profound loss, he grew into a man defined by strength and an unwavering spirit.

He bravely served his country in the Vietnam War as a "tunnel rat," a role requiring immense bravery and an ability to confront the most claustrophobic and perilous conditions. His experiences forged a man of quiet determination and an unshakeable resolve. After his military service, Johnny found a different kind of freedom on the open road, embarking on a long and successful career as an over-the-road truck driver. He crisscrossed the nation, experiencing its vastness from the cab of his rig, a solitary journey that suited his independent spirit.

Johnny's favorite hobby was walleye fishing on Lake Erie, his 66 Chevy Impala SS, and meeting up with the guys at the local beer gardens.

In 2017, a sudden stroke irrevocably altered John's life, leaving him dependent on others for basic care. His daughter, Keri, stepped into the role of his primary caregiver, a decision that reshaped both their worlds. She navigated the complexities of his rehabilitation, learned to communicate through his aphasia, and tirelessly advocated for his needs. Their journey, a testament to enduring love, transformed a challenging ordeal into a profound bond of shared resilience. Ultimately, Keri faced the heartbreaking reality of watching her father, her guiding light, her world, her hero, slip away, a moment forever etched in her memory.

Johnny will be remembered for his quiet strength, his enduring spirit in the face of adversity, and his dedication to his country and his family. He leaves behind a handful of ingrates and many beautiful grandchildren. His daughter and caregiver, Keri Brost, his granddaughter and caregiver Sara Brost and his granddaughter Stacy Diehl.

Memorial Gathering for Johnny will be August 24th and 1pm at Kim Tam, 2881 Canton Rd, Uniontown, OH 44865

Johnny will be honored with a military service at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery Rittman Ohio on September 26th, 2025 at 2:45pm.
