Johnny Buster Burrell of Mead, Oklahoma passed from this life on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the age of 83. He was born on Friday, November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas to William Albert and Frances Marie (Wells) Burrell.
Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas he attended Rice University in Houston, Texas on an athletic scholarship. While there he played both basketball and football as a freshman and was known as one of their most versatile all-around athletes. His sophomore year he focused exclusively on football and was a unanimous all-Southwest Conference team selection in 1960 and 1961. He played in the 1960 Sugar Bowl, the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl, and the 1962 Hula Bowl.
On June 7, 1962, he married Patricia Gayle (Walker) Burrell at Magnolia Christian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. That same year Johnny was drafted into the National Football League where he played a combined 7 years for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins. After retiring from the NFL, he enjoyed a successful career in sales with General Electric and Thompson Consumer Electronics. In 1982, Johnny was inducted into the Rice Football Hall of Fame. That was also the year he hit a hole in one at a golf tournament and won a brand new Mercury Cougar.
Johnny moved to Mead, Oklahoma in 2005. He loved spending time outdoors hunting, fishing and playing golf. And he loved life with his family at his home at Lake Texoma. He attended Victory Life Church in Durant, Oklahoma and was a very active member. Johnny was also very involved in their alcohol recovery program where he helped others learn to overcome their addictions.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Albert and Frances Marie (Wells) Burrell and sister Pam Wetz.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Patricia Gayle (Walker) Burrell; daughters Michele Spencer and husband Steve of Edmond, Oklahoma, Alisa Woods and husband Jim Woods of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren Noah Spencer and wife Erin Spencer of Kansas City, Missouri, Cory Spencer of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Ford Woods of Richardson, Texas, Payton Woods of Richardson, Texas; sister Ann Krueger of San Antonio, Texas and other extended family and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 11, 2024 at the Victory Life Church in Durant, Oklahoma.
Following the celebration of life service, friends and family are welcome to attend a gathering at the home at 376 Park Lake Rd. in Mead, Oklahoma.
