Johnny Lee Chatman, lovingly known as "Maine," passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, in
Metairie, Louisiana. Born on October 20, 1950, in Knoxville, Mississippi to the parents late Gracie Mcneal and late Authur Chatman. He was raised in Ferriday, Louisiana. Johnnie moved to New Orleans when he was 18. He married his first wife, late Savannah Scott, in 1798.
Johnnie is survived by his daughters, Lynelle Chatman, Shaun Chatman (and her husband Brandon Reed), and Monica Chatman. He was a proud grandfather to Savannah Chatman, Sh'quin Chatman, and Branden Antwan Ree, and a cherished great-grandfather to Elijah Cubas, Ja'Monica Cubas, and Stefan Chatman and his beloved twin sister, Jackie Chatman-Williams.
He also leaves behind his second wife, Shantel Chatman (2013-2026), and his stepdaughters, Destiny Evans, Faith Evans, and Hope Evans.
Johnnie spent many years contributing to the Jefferson Parish Education System and working in construction for Tonti. In both roles, he was known as a loyal colleague and a quiet leader who earned respect through his actions rather than seeking recognition. His work ethic and commitment to helping others left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A man of simple pleasures, Johnnie found beauty in everyday moments. He enjoyed maintaining a well-mown lawn, watching WWE Wrestling twice a week with enthusiasm, and coloring on his tablet-a pastime that brought him peace. He also enjoyed spending time with his dog and cleaning his Buick. Above all else, he treasured the company of his family. His love was evident not just in words but in the way he consistently showed up for those he cared about.
Johnnie's legacy lives on in the quiet strength he instilled in those who survive him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a reminder of the profound impact of kindness and steadfast love.
