Mr. Johnny E. Taft, age 86 of Axson, Ga. passed away Sunday, June 16, 2024 at his home in Axson, Ga. following an extended illness.
Mr. Taft was born November 10, 1937, in Pearson, Ga., son of the late Ira and Seatie Smith Taft. He had made his home in Atkinson County for all his life where he worked in pulpwood before going to work and retiring from Georgia Pacific after more than 25 years. After retirement he enjoyed deer hunting, planting his garden, riding his tractor, spending time with his family and especially his great grandchildren. As his health started to decline, he spent most days watching westerns. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Catherine Tracy Taft, and 2 sons, William and Robert Taft.
Survivors include:
Daughter: Shermilee Taylor and husband Ben of Axson, Ga.
3 Sons: John Taft and wife Teresa of Axson, Ga.
Henry Taft and girlfriend Susan of Axson, Ga.
Colonel Dale Taft of Axson, Ga.
13 Grandchildren, 28 Great-Grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Graveside funeral services for Mr. Taft were held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Newton Cox officiating. Special music included “Go Rest High On That Mountain” presented by cd. The interment followed in Sweetwater Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers were: Ryan Taft, Casey Taft, Dale Taft, Craig Odum, Reid Odum, and Emanuel Taft.
Honorary pallbearers were: Clifford Taft, David Coffee, Jonathan Strugis, Lewis Harrell, Damond Wood, Candace Walker, and Maria Smith.
Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements.
