Jon Matthew Abbott

Jon Matthew Abbott passed away on January 17, 2026, at the Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, at the age of 81.

Jon was born May 7, 1944, in Clinton, Iowa to Lee L. and Grace M. (Mulligan) Abbott. He was a 1962 graduate of Fulton High School and later earned an Associate's Degree from Clinton Community College.

Jon proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged. After his service, he worked at Clinton Corn Processing Company for many years before changing careers and working for Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, later acquired by Union Pacific Railroad as a crew caller.

Jon married Sandra Barnes on June 3, 1967, in Fulton, Illinois, and to this union Matthew, Amy and Peter were born.

Jon enjoyed watching old Westerns, eating out at local restaurants with close friends, spending time with his older brother, Jim, and always having a Diet Mountain Dew at the ready.

Jon is survived by his son, Peter (Abbey) Abbott of Coralville, IA; his daughter, Amy Henrikson of Batavia, IL; his brother, Richard "Rick" (Patricia) Abbott of Chesterfield, VA; his sister, Mary Katherine "Kit" (Scott) Clark of Hoffman Estates, IL; his daughter-in-law, Tracie Neustel-Abbott of Cedar Rapids, IA, and his grandchildren, Julia and Cole Henrikson, Mason and Brodie Abbott, Duncan and Quinn Abbott.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and their spouses, Lee "Tom" (Cheryl) Abbott & James "Jim" (Connie) Abbott; sister and her spouse, Martha (Russell) Kiger; nephew, Timothy Abbott; and son, Matthew Abbott.

Private military honors will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
