Date of Birth: September 6, 1942
Jon P. Pitman, 82, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at his home in Lewiston, Maine.
Born to Eleanor Standish Pitman and C. Johnson Pitman, Jon grew up with a strong sense of hard work and the value of education - qualities that shaped both his personal life and his career. He was a proud graduate of the Coburn School, Colby College, and the University of Vermont Medical School.
Jon built a long and impactful career in healthcare leadership, serving in key roles at St. Mary's General Hospital in Lewiston, as well as hospitals in Waterville, Rockland, and at VA hospitals in Augusta, Maine, and Jackson, Mississippi. He was known as an early champion of hospice care, nuclear medicine, and mammography in Central Maine - helping bring critical innovations to the region long before they were widely available.
Beyond his medical career, Jon invested deeply in his community through business ventures, generous philanthropy, and hands-on service. He brought his intellect and steady leadership to every challenge, always focused on solving problems and supporting growth.
He was a longtime member of Pathway Vineyard and found meaningful ways to combine his medical knowledge and faith, including medical mission trips with organizations like Operation Blessing.
He loved to read, hunt, and travel - having visited every continent on the planet.
Jon was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Crowley Pitman.
He is survived by his sister, Sharyn, and his three children: Jean and her husband David, Marc and his wife Emily, and Shelly and her husband Nobuharu. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Daniel, Melissa (Stephen), David (Cara), Caleb, Anna, Reid, Kaz, and Aya.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the fall. Details will be shared at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Jon's memory in a way he would have appreciated: update your will, read a good book, plan a trip, or take the time to learn something new.
