Anthony "Tony" Michael Eramo

Old Orchard Beach

Anthony "Tony" Michael Eramo, 92, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, January 30, at the Inn at Atlantic Heights.

Tony was born in Lewiston, Maine, on December 5, 1933, one of seven children born to Zachiele and Domenica Eramo. He grew up in Brunswick, where in 1943, his father opened the family's business, New Meadows Market. As a young man, Tony worked at the Market alongside his father and siblings, learning the values of hard work and dedication that guided him throughout his life.

After graduating from Brunswick High School in 1953, Tony enrolled in the Saco-Lowell Shops Apprentice Program, where he studied drafting and engineering. Tony graduated in 1957, launching a long and successful career. It was during this time that Tony met the love of his life, Beatrice "Bea" Fournier. They were married on September 28, 1957, at St. Margaret's Parish and enjoyed 59½ years together.

Tony's military service began in 1956 as an Army Reservist with the First Army Maine and lasted until 1963.

Tony's engineering career took him to Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. Tony and Bea purchased a home in Weymouth and started their family welcoming a daughter, Jacqueline.

The family returned to Maine in 1961. Tony and Bea purchased a three-unit home near the ocean in Old Orchard Beach, where they lived and rented the remaining units to summer visitors. Soon they welcomed their second daughter, Catherine. Tony was a devoted and proud father, an exceptional "girl dad."

Tony was employed by Metal Tech Co. located in Biddeford. Over the years, Metal Tech transitioned to Honeycomb Systems Inc., and later to Velmet Inc. Tony specialized in designing paper machinery and retired as a Senior Designer in 1998, ending 37 years of employment.

Retirement allowed Tony and Bea time to travel, and they enjoyed multiple "bucket list" trips. They visited Australia and Alaska, and took extended road trips with friends, spending several weeks at a time exploring the United States. Retirement also provided Tony more time for family. Tony was extremely close to his grandchildren and spent many hours with them in his basement workshop designing and building projects, gardening, and cooking.

Tony was a man of deep faith and a long-time parishioner of St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach. He served his church in many capacities, including passing the collection basket at weekly Mass. In 1965, Tony joined the Catholic fraternal service order, Knights of Columbus, and was an active member for nearly 60 years, serving as Past Grand Knight for two years and State District Deputy for three years during his tenure.

Tony was deeply committed to serving his community. He volunteered with the Town Clerk's office and served as a ballot clerk for 15 years on election days. In 2004, Tony began volunteering with the OOB Call Force. Tony assisted with traffic detail, ensuring public safety during vehicle accidents and other emergencies, and volunteered at special community events all throughout the year. Tony cherished being involved in his community and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Tony's likable nature and easy-going personality made him a beloved member of his community.

Tony will be remembered for his faith, devotion to family, and his lifelong commitment to serving others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Tony is survived by his daughters: Catherine (Eramo) Cyr and husband Scott, and Jacqueline (Eramo) Thurber and husband Arthur, his sisters: Rita MacElman and Elena Eramo, of Brunswick; and his sister-in-law: Lauren Eramo of MA, his grandchildren: Alison (Cyr) Hunter and husband Aaron, Patrick Cyr, Tiffany (Thurber) Fishburn and husband Jason, Roger Thurber and life partner Erica Clement and Nicole (Thurber) Marks and husband Jeff, as well as several great-grandchildren with another arriving in May.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife: Beatrice (Fournier) Eramo, his parents Zachiele and Domenica (Masselli) Eramo, his brothers: Dominic Eramo and wife Debra, and Michael Eramo, his sisters: Rose Eramo and Filomena Eramo, and his sister Rita's life partner, Royal Farmer.
