Jon Smooth Lamont Smith was born on June 27, 1962, in the city of Huntington, W.Va. Jon was born to the late John Cotton and Brenda Lee Smith.
Jon was passionate about basketball, he played throughout his childhood and went on to college to play basketball. He graduated from Huntington High School in the class of 1980, the year he was named basketball player of the year. Following high school, Smooth went on to play basketball at WV State College and then later transferred to University of Pikeville, Kentucky. Later Jon would then move to Columbus, Ohio where he worked for T. Marzetti for 28 years.
Jon remained connected to basketball throughout his life by playing on summer leagues and coaching the Franklinton Titans AAU youth basketball team and OYSP (Ohio Youth Sports Preparatory) basketball team. On August 18, 2022, Jon lost his battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
Jon was called home to heaven to join his father, John Cotton and mother Brenda Smith-Ervin, Grandmother Lillian Smith, Brother Ronald Dolla Smith, Sister Debbie Disco Deb Smith Gibson-White and grandson Jae son Hill who preceded him in death.
Jon leaves to cherish his memories, girlfriend Seretta McBroom. His children Charlie (Kasey) Pankey of Indian Land, SC and Brandon Beast Champagne) Hill of Columbus, Oh, surrogate children Trevelyn and Chassdie and Rokeem Jordan. Siblings, Charles Randy Smith of Richmond, Va. Stacy (George) Crisp of Huntington, WV. And Lillian Michelle Ken) Logwood of Reynoldsburg, Oh. Grandchildren Keymaura, Aydin, Ryleigh and Brycen Pankey of Indian Land, SC. Breia and Brandon Hill of Huntington, WV, Jae onna and Jae Mya Hill of Columbus, Ohio.
Jon had many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives, special friends and his AAU basketball team members that will cherish his memories and remember all the fond times that were enjoyed with Smooth .
Visitation 1:00 PM and Funeral Service 2:00 PM Saturday, August 27, 2022 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave. (one block east of Noe Bixby, turn North on Lonsdale Rd).
