Jonathan Hall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Front Range Burial & Cremation Service on Jan. 12, 2026.
Jonathan Ellis Hall (April 30, 1955) passed on-at home as he had wished-as 2025 ended and 2026 began.

Jon was born in Cedar Rapids, but spent the majority of his formative years in Creston, IA. He graduated from Creston High School in 1973, where he developed his musical talents while performing in the jazz ensemble as well as his lifelong impishness when he and friends pulled a prank notable enough to be chronicled in the Creston News Advertiser. After high school he earned an Associates' Degree at Southwestern Community College and worked a variety of jobs before moving to Colorado to pursue his passion for outdoor activities.

For many years Jon used his technical acumen as a photo copier repair technician, but it was his hobbies and interests that were what truly defined him and connected him with his people friends. Nature and outdoor activities were a lifelong love that influenced many of those interests including camping, rock climbing, and canoeing. Along the way he shared this passion his passions with many friends and family members, finding specific joy in the many family canoe trips he took even as his physical abilities declined.

In retirement he found a new passion in ham radio. It quickly became more than a hobby as he became an active part of the community, both over the airwaves as well as in person through a job at the Ham Radio Outlet and during the "fox hunt" meetups, when the weather was agreeable. Being able to make those connections was an incredible positive in the last part of his life.

Jon leaves behind his two children, Xander and Alison; his siblings Melinda and her husband Ron, Priscilla and husband Scott, Larry and his wife Kathy, and Andrew; and his beloved cat, Flynn. He joins his parents, Donald and Mary "Pat" in death.

A wake will be held in the Denver/Lakewood area on February 28th, with specifics to be determined. A later gathering in Iowa is also being planned, date and details to be determined.

In lieu of flowers you can donate to the following non-profits in his name. If you wish to donate please use the links below.

I am sorry to hear of Jon's passing. He was always good spirited and fun to be with. He enjoyed being a school photographer in high school. Wish I had stayed in contact with him over the years.

In Mrs. Beck's sixth grade geography class, we learned that the gauchos of Argentina used a bolo to bring down small game. I'm not sure what the assignment was, but Jon and I went to his basement and made a bolo out of 2 golf balls (we both were amazed at what happens when you drill into a golf ball) and a long leather shoelace. Mrs. Beck said, "Let's go try it." We hadn't really practiced, but with the whole class outside, she rolled a hula hoop across the playground. Like a true gaucho, Jon let it fly and brought the hoop down on the first try! Everyone applauded and it was very memorable for me. I will miss you Jon. R.I. P.

I was so sad to learn of Jon´s passing. I generally don´t recall specific events from my Creston years but I always remember how people made me feel. Jon had that happy, joyful presence that made me smile whenever he was around.

I was very sad to hear about Jon's passing. What I remember most was his great sense of humor. I was involved in a high school prank or two that were alluded to. Conodelences to his family and friends and may he RIP.
