Jonathan Scott Hella
April 3, 1985 – September 4, 2023
Beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend. Jon is survived by his parents -Ray (Marcy) and Sue Hella, his sisters -Nicole (Paul) Taylor and Ally Hella, his grandparents -Scott and Estelle Oliver and Ronald Hella, his nieces and nephews -Kaylee, Christian, Cole & Kate Taylor as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Jon is proceeded in death by grandmother Rosemary Hella.
Jon was born in Rochester, Michigan at Crittenton Hospital on April 3, 1985. He grew up in Troy, graduating Niles in 2004. Growing up, Jon loved skateboarding and could be found around the neighborhood raising cane with his friends. Jon enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2008, graduating from Paris Island in spring of 2008. He went on to serve for nearly five years as a Rifleman ranked Corporal in the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment Kilo Company. Jon served in active duty from 2008 to 2012, and in the reserves from 2012 to 2016. During Jon's years of service, he deployed to Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Bahrain, Dubai, Italy and Kuwait.
After returning to the states, he deployed to Haiti as a part of the humanitarian aid after the earthquake. Jon then deployed to Afghanistan and fought in the war on terror. Jon was a proud squad leader and left his years of service ranked as a Sergeant. Jon served his country proudly and honorably, renowned by his fellow Marines as dedicated, strong, brave, courageous and an overall solid leader, man and friend. Many lifelong friendships were forged during his time in the service, especially with his now brother-in-law, Paul Taylor, who went on to marry his sister, Nicole.
Of the many titles that Jon wore in his life, uncle was surely his favorite. Jon was a natural caretaker who always had a love for kids, playing an important role for many over the various seasons of his life. Jon was and always will be the favorite uncle for his nieces and nephews. His two nephews are the spitting image of him and will carry on his wit. His funny stories and jokes will be cherished and remembered fondly by the Taylor tribe.
Jon had a love for cooking, and worked in several restaurants over various chapters of his life. Many years were spent working as a cook at National Coney Island, a metro Detroit delicacy, whipping up Hanis for eager customers -often family and friends. Jon also enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. Whether it was a creek down the road, one of the great lakes or the ocean, you could find Jon out by the water with a pole in his hand with friends and family.
While Jon had a loyalty to his country and the ones he loved, there was a void left from the war fought in Afghanistan. Jon served his country honorably and courageously, fighting the toughest battles at home against the demons of PTSD. After several years of fighting these demons, Jon's soul went on to find peace on September 4, 2023. While his tired soul is finally able to rest, our hearts will be forever heavy. He will never be forgotten, and his spirit will live on in the lives he touched in his 38 years on earth. Semper Fi, and rest easy.
Written with love and a heavy heart by your baby sister
