Winter Harbor
Jonathan Robert Wood, 43, of Winter Harbor passed away unexpectedly on September 4, 2024. He was born September 21, 1980, to Robert Alan Wood and Cynthia Marie Johnson in Concord, Massachusetts.
Jon moved to Maine in 1992 and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1998. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees where his rate was BUCN. His duty stations included Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. After returning home, Jon spent time living in Maine, Massachusetts, California and Utah. He later settled back in the Hancock County area full time. He worked in many fields over the years including lobster fishing, truck driving, landscaping, plumbing, welding, carpentry and masonry. He prided himself on his hard work ethic and multifaceted skillset.
From an early age, Jon was an avid artist using multiple mediums to create including sketching, painting, and sculpture. Forever a fan of music, he began playing guitar as a teenager and continued to flourish as a musician ever since, becoming an accomplished guitarist, bassist and singer/songwriter. Jon had a special gift to be able to pick up any instrument and immediately make it produce a beautiful sound with seemingly little effort. He played in many bands over the years and could often be found jamming at local open mics.
Jon also enjoyed riding motorcycles, attending concerts, building and fixing guitars, watching documentary shows, and spending time with family and friends. Recently he had been helping to fix up a friend's house, teaching his daughter to play guitar, metal- detecting with his son, and reconnecting with his uncle, William Johnson.
Jon is survived by his six children, Issac and Olivia Wood Cottrell of Layton, Utah; Lorelei, Alden, Josiah and Ira Wood of Winter Harbor; mother, Cynthia Marie (Johnson) Stevens of North Dakota; brother Gabriel Wood and wife Suzanne of Ellsworth; brother Samuel Stevens and wife Karli of Orrington; one niece, three nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, many extended family members, as well as his friends, including many fellow musicians and artists. He is predeceased by his father Robert Wood of Massachusetts; stepfather Walter Stevens of Surry; "Grammy" Melva (Wood) Johnson of Massachusetts; and "Grampa" Richard Johnson of Massachusetts.
A celebration of life will be held on a soon-to-be-determined date. A GoFundMe is currently available to help offset final arrangements and benefit Jon's children at https://gofund.me/d729189b if you would like to donate.
