Joni Yvonne Barefoot

Joni Yvonne Hayman Barefoot, age 69, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away at her residence on Thursday, November 27, 2025. She was born in Redding, CA, on October 25, 1956, to the late Leland Farrell Hayman and Emily Brown Jones. Joni was the wife of Johnnie Barefoot, Jr.
Joni owned and operated her own daycare, where she nurtured countless young lives with boundless patience and care. Her devotion to the children she cared for was evident in every aspect of her work. In addition to her professional endeavors, Joni was an active member of the Moose Lodge.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Jeffrey Barefoot (Katie) of Elizabeth City, NC; step-daughter, Joni Elaine Barefoot of Elizabeth City, NC; step-sons, Ronnie Barefoot (Ruth) and Tony Barefoot (Katie), all of Elizabeth City, NC; sisters, Marie Beasley of Riverview, FL, Teresa Cook (Thomas) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Gina Young (Jason) of Ocala, FL, Tonia McCarraher (John) of Shawboro, NC, Tina Adams, of Plant City, FL, and Jenny Cain (Matt) of Thomasville, GA; grandchildren, Erin, Justin, Gracie, Liara, JD, and Brewer Barefoot; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joni was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael Hayman and James Hayman.
Joni's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
