Jose attended school in Mexico and San Felipe College. He moved to California in 1975 before settling in South Sioux City at the age of 18. He dedicated many years of his life to his career at Tyson Foods, where he first worked during its IBP days and remained until his retirement. His commitment and hard work were hallmarks of his character, and he took great pride in his profession.

Jose leaves behind his wife, Evelyn DeLeon, and his children: Lupita DeLeon (Sergio Limon) of Zapotlanejo Mexico, Luis Fuentes of Sioux City, Daysie Fuentes (Humberto Valencia) of South Sioux City, and Yeraldi Fuentes of Sioux City. He also took great pride in his grandchildren, Natalie Valencia-DeLeon, Emmanuel Aldana-DeLeon, Humberto Valencia-DeLeon Jr., Maximilliano Limon-DeLeon, and Jayden Valencia-DeLeon. His siblings, Victor Manuel DeLeon, Jorge Alberto DeLeon, Manuel DeLeon, Mario DeLeon, and Teresa DeLeon, remember him fondly as well.
