José Agustín “El Toro” López Rodríguez, 89, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on July 4, 2025. He was born to Toribio López and Encarnación Rodríguez in Ciudad Fernández, San Luis Potosí, México, on February 29, 1936.
José was hardworking, kind, resilient, generous, and wise. He was a master carpenter who dedicated forty years of his life to his craft. In his leisure time, he liked fishing, gardening, and teaching his carpentry skills to his children. Nonetheless, his most cherished moments were with his family. He practiced the Catholic faith, was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and was well-known in the San Benito community.
He was preceded in death by his son, José “Chicago Bull” López, Jr.; his parents, Toribio and Encarnación Rodríguez López; his brother, Eusebio López; his sister, Chabela López and granddaughter, Baby Jessica Zambrano.
Left to cherish José’s memory are his loving wife, Celia Rodríguez López; his children, Juan López (LaToya), María López (Jesus S. Zambrano), Miguel López (Elizabeth Limón), Luz López Vasquez (Rocky), Toribio López (Wendy Gómez), David López (Judith), Donna López (Ricardo Medrano, Jr.). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Shawn Rowles, Natalia López, Jazmin López, Armando Alonzo Jr., Abraham Alonzo, April M. Alonzo (Gamaliel Rodriguez), Anthony López, Caeli I. Zambrano, Dayna López, Elizabeth Medellín López, Athian N. Barrón (Lynae), Pablo J. Barrón (Cindy), Estephanie N. Ramos, Elizabeth L. Ramos, Alexia V. Hernández, Rosa López, Raelene López, Zenaida López, Athena López, Alyssa Aguirre, Alex Ensinia, Ricardo Medrano III, Lisa M. Medrano, Emilio Medrano, Eliza R. Medrano. As well as his great-grandchildren including Amir Rowles, Isla Rowles, Audrey Alonzo, Ashley Alonzo, Scarlett M. Rodriguez, Nora Lynn Barrón.
The López family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Following the Mass, José will be laid to rest at San Benito Memorial Park Cemetery.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Juan López, Miguel López, Toribio López, David López, Natalia López, and Efraín Zúñiga.
