Joseph Barnhart Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Joseph R. Barnhart was born on December 3, 1945 in Los Angeles, California to Joseph and Norma Barnhart. Joseph, who resided in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on August 31, 2025 at the age of 79. Beloved husband of Janis Barnhart. Loving father of John (Catherine) Barnhart and Mical (Alina) Barnhart. Dear brother of William (Laurie) Barnhart. Dearest grandfather of Emily, Joshua, Keira, and Lexi. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Gregory (Mary) Barnhart. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Joseph spent the majority of his life as a proud resident of Detroit, and found his vocational calling in education. Joseph, known as "Mr. B" by his students, was a high school math and history teacher for the Detroit Public School system. He spent most of his teaching career at Denby High School, where he started and led the school's chess and photography club, among other activities. The severity of his chronic health issues caused Joseph to retire from teaching and go on disability in 1995 at the age of 49. Joseph had many passions in his life including history, cinema, and "oldies" music. He was an avid fan of both Detroit and Los Angeles sports teams, although Joe would side with the L.A. teams if it came down to the two. Above all these things, Joseph's greatest passion in life was his wife, two sons, and their families. Though his body continued to fail him, what he lacked in physical ability he made up for in love for his family. Joseph will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and loving heart.
Joseph will lie in state from 12-1pm at Messiah Evangelical Covenant Church, 3816 Toledo St., Detroit, MI 48216 on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Funeral service Saturday 1:00 pm at the church. Please share memories and/or leave condolences on Joseph's guestbook or on his tribute wall.
