It is with heavy hearts we announce the death of Jeffrey Barnhart, a beloved local artist, on October 2, 2025 at Mercy House in Chambersburg, PA. He did not squander a single moment of his 76 years and was recognized for his vibrant personality, boundless creativity and deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures - nature's beauty, music, travel, food, and the cherished friendships he built along the way.
Born in Chambersburg, Jeff's artistic journey spanned many years and mediums. Whether through striking landscapes, emotive portraits, or still life renderings, his work reflected a passion for discovery and a profound connection to the world around him. He described his art as representational with an impressionist twist. Jeff's artwork is part of numerous private and corporate collections and has been included in exhibitions including the Pastel Society of America, New York, NY and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD as well as being featured in art galleries in Washington, DC, Bethesda, MD, New York City, NY and Lancaster, PA to name a few. Jeff was a supportive member of the Franklin County Art Alliance. He also taught private classes and plein air workshops locally as well as in North Carolina and Mexico. His students were encouraged, whether they worked in oil, pastel, or watercolor, to keep in mind his basic principles - create a strong drawing and composition, use an abundance of imaginative and interesting color and insert a personal involvement in your work.
After graduating from the Ringling School of Art & Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Jeff returned to his home town to open the Art Center offering art supplies and custom framing for his customers. It was located on North Main Street adjacent to Barnhart's Paint and Wallpaper store, which was owned by his dad, Lewis "Woody" Barnhart, who died in 1979. Jeff eventually sold the store to focus on his art.
Jeff's love for exploration was infectious. He traveled extensively and always with his sketch book or watercolors to capture a place, the light, or a mood firsthand. He was always looking for and finding inspiration in the diverse cultures, markets, architecture and landscapes he encountered. From Peru to Portugal, California to Cambodia, and Maine to Morocco, Jeff's adventures were as much a part of his story as his art. His ability to weave these experiences into his creations was a testament to his free-spirited nature and his belief in living fully in every moment.
Music was another lifelong passion. Jeff played the piano and the organ. He was a member of the Mercersburg Area Chorus for over 40 years singing in numerous performances. Jeff was often found in the company of friends attending concerts and operas or simply enjoying his favorite classical music played on his turntable or radio at home. And whether cooking a homemade meal or exploring new culinary delights, Jeff's enthusiasm for good food, tasty beverages and great company was unmatched.
Those who knew Jeff will remember him not only for his artistic talent but also for his kindness, warmth and truthful nature. He had an innate ability to make those around him feel seen and valued, always ready with a listening ear or a laugh to brighten the day. His circle of friends was vast and each person who crossed his path was touched by his generosity and unending curiosity about the world.
Jeff leaves behind a community (almost a universe) of friends, family and admirers who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. He is survived by Mildred, his mother, Saundra, his sister, Helen, his aunt, caring cousins, his nephews, a niece… and a very diverse network of beloved companions, fellow artists and devoted students who all consider themselves fortunate to have known him.
A Retrospective of Jeff's Art opens at the Wallspace Gallery, Chambersburg on October 11, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date to honor a valued and talented spirit that will never be forgotten. Jeff's journey on earth may have ended, but his art, music and love for life will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Jeff said, "No flowers, please. I had a good life. Now, go eat lots of ice cream and talk about me. Cheers, Adios, Ciao, Adieu and Hugs."
