Joseph "Joey" Patrick Bozza, 64, of Jackson Twp., NJ, passed away on Wednesday July 23, 2025. Surrounded by the sisters he adored, his was a peaceful transition into the arms of His Savior and waiting parents.
Born into a world that didn't yet understand the heights those born with Down Syndrome could reach, in his first hours of life the medical "experts" painted a bleak picture of Joey's life.
But against the naysayers, Joey's devoted parents, Joe and Elenore, overcame their fears and went forward in faith.
There were many challenges. Yet Joey's German mother, fairly new to this country, found the strength to establish many firsts in their community for special needs children and later adults. These included the first special needs pre-school, boy scout troops, bowling leagues and more, including developing and coaching Special Olympic teams that brought Joey and his friends much joy and many medals, along with a memorable trip to the National Games.
As was surely God's plan for his life, because of Joey, many special needs folks and their families' lives were enriched. His journey became a beacon-proof that faith, love, and perseverance could shatter limitations and open doors for so many who followed.
Joey was a true light in this world. He loved all unconditionally and effortlessly elicited affection from whomever he met, just by being Joey. He laughed a lot, made corny jokes, was rarely down, was eternally hopeful and tolerant, and gave the best hugs.
As Jesus taught: "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." There was no purer heart than Joey's.
He was born in Germany and resided in Howell Twp., prior to settling in Jackson Twp., 25 years ago. He was employed by the Center for Vocational Rehabilitation, Eatontown, NJ for 35 years.
Joey was a communicant of The Church of St. Monica, Jackson Twp. He also belonged to the Guys & Dolls Bowling League and the Jackson Bocce League. Over the years he was a multi-medal champion in the Special Olympics.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph R. and Eleonore A. Bozza. Joseph is survived by his sisters, Dianna Davies (Brian), Joanna Matthews (Tom) and Donna Bozza; and by his niece and nephews, Joe Matthews, Alexandra Rich, Mike Davies (Vivien) and Bob Davies (Stella) and grandnephew, Declan He-Davies.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson, NJ. A funeral gathering will be offered at 9:15 AM on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the funeral home. His Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 AM at The Church of St. Monica, 679 W.
