Joseph Patrick Callahan

After nearly 46 years of uncertainty, the family of Joseph Patrick Callahan can finally bring our loved one home. Joseph was last seen in Ridley Park, PA in the Fall of 1979 when he left to hitch hike to Florida. He was identified on January 6, 2026 through the advancements in forensic genetic genealogy, bringing closure to a cold case that spanned over four decades.

Following his disappearance in 1979, Joseph's whereabouts remained a mystery until skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area near Rowland, N.C. on March 20, 1080. His death was a homicide. For almost 46 years, he was known only as "John Doe", a somber treatment of a life paused in memory.

Joseph Patrick Callahan was born March 18, 1959 and was raised in Ridley Park, PA. Joe was a beloved son and brother, who loved to hike and explore the world. He was friendly and trusted others. He graduated from Ridley High School in 1977. Though his life was tragically cut short, he is finally remembered by name, not by a case number.

Joseph is survived by siblings Aleta (Charles) DiPaolo of Cape Coral, FL, Edward of Pahoa, HI, Patricia (the late John) Klaus of Boyertown, PA. John (Paula) of Swarthmore, PA, Paul of Cape Coral, FL, Daniel of Huntsville, TX and Laura (Joseph) Reynolds of Rising Sun, MD.

He was the 7th child of Edward C. Callahan (deceased) and Mary (Hupy) Callahan (deceased 2023).

The family wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to the Robeson County Sheriff's Office, Lumberton, NC, the State Medical Examiner in Raleigh, NC and the NamUS(.gov) (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System) for their relentless dedication for never forgetting that every "Doe" is someone's missing loved one.

Family and friends are invited to visit at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 20, 2026 at Doyle-Stonelake Funeral Home, 85 E. Baltimore Avenue, Lansdowne, PA 19050. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM, followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery to honor Joe's memory and finally lay him to rest alongside his parents and family.
