Joseph CLOUGHERTY Obituary

CLOUGHERTY, Joseph A. Age 87, of Braintree passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday, May 18, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by family.

Joe was raised in Charlestown, where he attended St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Cathedral High School in Boston. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1958, serving in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Joe was appointed to the Boston Fire Department on June 8, 1966. Rising through the ranks, Joe retired as Superintendent of the Fire Alarm Division in 2002.

Although Joe lived in Braintree for 50 years, he remained a city kid at heart with fond memories of his adolescent jobs selling newspapers in the North End and working in the meat market near Haymarket Square. In his retirement and up until his illness progressed, Joe was a daily communicant and enjoyed swimming six days a week at the Weymouth Club.

Joe leaves his wife of 59 years, Jane Ellen (Horrigan) Clougherty, formerly of Quincy. He was the devoted father of Joseph Clougherty and his wife, Tina Girndt-Clougherty of Urbana, IL, Kevin Clougherty of Old Lyme, CT, Thomas Clougherty of Scituate, MA and Jane Ellen Clougherty of Philadelphia, PA; and grandchildren, Catalin, Coleman and Andrew.

He is the beloved son of the late John E. Clougherty and Anna M. (Hennessey) Clougherty; and the beloved brother of Mary McNelley of Woburn, Leo Clougherty of Roslindale, Jean Harrington of Peabody; and was predeceased by siblings, John E. Clougherty, Jr., Robert Clougherty, Patricia Roney, Paul Clougherty, Evelyn Hanf, Bernard Clougherty, Charles Clougherty, Jane Green, Peter Clougherty and Cecelia Clougherty.

Joe is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Thursday, May 29, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM, in the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., BRAINTREE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 30, at 11:00 AM, in St. Clare Parish, 1244 Liberty St., Braintree. Burial will be at a later date at Braintree Plain Street Cemetery.

Donations in Joseph's memory may be made to the Braintree Catholic Collaborative of St. Francis and St. Clare, at 856 Washington Street, Braintree, MA 02184 or to a charity of your choice.
