Joseph Colwell, a proud retired veteran of 30 years of the United States Marine Corps, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023.
The son of the late Libron and Margaret Colwell, Joseph Colwell grew up in Trenton, North Wildwood, Pennsville, Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Stone Harbor, NJ. He was born February 9, 1936 in Trenton, NJ.
At the age of 16, Joseph Colwell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. As part of this service, he served as a Logistics Chief. He fought in the Vietnam War and was also attached to the Navy and served on the USS New Jersey and the USS Okinawa. On April 4, 1968, while serving on the USS Okinawa, after an intensive period of special training, Okinawa recovered the unmanned Apollo 6 space capsule 380 miles north of Kauai, Hawaii. Then on August 7, 1971, Okinawa was the recovery ship for the Apollo 15 spacecraft and crew of the fourth crewed Apollo program lunar landing mission. While serving in the Marines, he received the following awards: Pistol Marksman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Navy Achievement Medal, Certificate of Commendation, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal Color, Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal.
Joseph Colwell is survived by his wife, Michiko Colwell, a daughter Sherry Rowell (David) and a son Michel J. Colwell (Tammy), 6 grandchildren, Sherra Cox (Jason), Adrian Bellamy (Cody), Jason Colwell (Taylor), Keiko Locklin,Austin Sparks, and Ashley Gunnoe (Nathan), and 11 great-grandchildren, Levi Cox, Audrey Cox, Chayton Hughes, Norah Hughes, Victoria Ludlam, Kayla Colwell, Sophia Colwell, Kelby Locklin, Fallon Locklin, Arlo Gunnoe and Jensen Gunnoe. His loved ones and friends will remember him for his warm smile, his wit and humor, and for always saying "soggy noodles" instead of good-bye.
A memorial service honoring the life of Joseph Colwell will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Lewis Crematory & Funeral Service located at 4947 Hwy 17 S Bypass, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
