Joseph B. Coons, age 86, will forever be remembered for his kind heart, vibrant spirit, and unwavering faith. Born in Binghamton, New York, on July 21, 1938, Joe enriched the lives of those around him until he joyfully entered into eternity with Our Lord on March 6, 2025.
Though he is predeceased by his beloved parents, Miles and Gertrude Coons, as well as his cherished daughter, Heather Coons, and siblings Arline Friends, Dorothy Klinko, Phyllis Brown, Miles Jr. (Mike) Coons, Andrea Riker,Carol Miller and step-grandson Justin Kehoe, Joe leaves behind a beautiful legacy. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley Coons, who stood by his side through life's journey, and their daughters, Tami Pignone (Craig McKeel), Kelly (Barry) Bonitz, and Amy (Christopher) Kehoe; son, Christopher Coons (Sunny Barja); grandchildren, Lauren (Tyler) Chesko, Erich Bonitz, Brandon Falkner, and step-grandson Jason Kehoe; great-grandchildren Jaylee Kehoe, Kaden Kehoe, Colton Chesko, and Lily Chesko; as well as sister Catherine (Phil) Gratton and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was a proud graduate of Binghamton North High School and earned his associate's degree from Broome Community College in 1986. His exemplary career included roles in the accounting field at Endicott Forging, The Children's Home of Wyoming Conference, and High Street United Methodist Church. Joe also served his country honorably in the United States Army and served on the board of United Methodist Homes.
A dedicated member of both High Street United Methodist Church and Fairview United Methodist Church, Joe's love for music was evident as he sang in the choir and contributed to the community by working at church barbeques and volunteering at the food pantry and community dinners. His passions extended to coin collecting, German Steins, playing games, and the exhilarating joy of hot air balloons.
To honor Joe's memory, calling hours will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Fairview United Methodist Church, located at 254 Robinson Street, Binghamton, New York 13904. A Funeral Service celebrating his life and legacy will follow.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the medical staff at One Ross at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Joe's name to the Fairview United Methodist Church.
