Joe was born on September 8, 1921 in Sherman, Texas, the son of John and Mary Mayfield Covey. He graduated from Sherman High School and married Verla Jean Droegemeier on July 25, 1942 in Durant, Oklahoma. They just celebrated 70 years of marriage.
For over 50 years he was in the garment manufacturing business with many factories in numerous locations in Texas and Oklahoma. He was a member of Elks Lodge Lakesite #238, the CB Club and Georgetown Baptist Church.
Mr. Covey was honored in 2009 at the Boot Scootin' Ball as one of the 1969 founders of the Preston Volunteer Emergency Services, which is still operating and growing today. In February 1969, Joe and several others from the Preston community were concerned about the long response time for fire fighters to reach the Preston area. Working out of the workshop behind Joe's house, the group organized and incorporated as a non-profit, non-stock and tax exempt corporation, Preston Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department. In 1972 he also helped found Preston Community Church. Joe was known for his many chariable donations and support to many in need.
Preston Volunteer Emergency Services firefighters will serve as his pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Preston Volunteer Emergency Services, P.O. Box 518, Pottsboro, Texas 75076.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Verla Jean Covey of Pottsboro; sons, Joe Allen Covey and his wife, Madalyn of Denison, and Herbie Covey and his wife, Pam of Pottsboro, Texas; daughter, Linda Jean Bosworth and her husband, Steve of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Shannon Engle and her husband, Robert of Allen, Texas, Kim McCool and her husband, Bob of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Sherri Dawn Kirby and her husband, Ray of Allen, Texas and Britni Dulock and her husband, Bryan of Lindsey, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren.
