Joseph DeMarco Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vincent Gangemi Funeral Home Inc on Mar. 31, 2026.
DeMarco

Joseph R., age 78, March 29, 2026. Beloved companion of Yun Li. Son of the late Fred and Caroline DeMarco. Dear brother of Louise (Thomas) Kelly and Salvatore (Joann) DeMarco. He was also predeceased by his partner, Bill Philips, a sociologist and professor at Widener University.

Joseph lived a life defined by intellect, independence, compassion, and courage. A proud South Philadelphia native and Eagle Scout, he pursued a lifelong devotion to learning, earning graduate degrees in History from Temple University and in Information Systems from Drexel University. His intellectual curiosity was boundless-he was deeply knowledgeable in European and American history, as well as art history, and spoke fluent Italian along with some French and German.

Joe dedicated many years to education and community building. At St. Joseph's Preparatory School, he established a library that became a lasting resource for students and mentored young people, often accompanying them to Model United Nations conferences in New York. He was an independent thinker, never one to follow the crowd or accept easy answers, and he held firmly to his principles throughout his life.

A pioneer in the early gay rights movement, Joe was a founding member and original incorporator of Philadelphia's Gay Community Center (now the William Way LGBT Community Center), helping to secure its early legal foundation and serving on its first Policy Council.

He was active in the Gay Activists Alliance and contributed as editor of the Philadelphia Weekly Gayzette and later New Gay Life, among the earliest gay publications in the city, helping to shape a vision of an inclusive and just community. His writing on social issues, including an award-winning article on gay racism, reflected both his insight and his commitment to equality.

Joe was also a prolific and accomplished writer. Under the name Joseph R.G. DeMarco, he authored numerous works of fiction, including the Marco Fontana Mysteries and the Doyle and Kord series, as well as essays and contributions to major anthologies and encyclopedias. His writing combined sharp storytelling with a deep understanding of human nature, often enriched by his love of art, history, and vibrant city life. Most of his novels were set in Philadelphia, with one set in Florida, and others planned for future works inspired by European cities.

Above all, Joe was a person of profound kindness and sensitivity. He was gentle, thoughtful, and deeply attuned to the struggles of others, always ready to offer help, understanding, and support. He was, to those who knew him well, a steady presence-wise, compassionate, and unwavering.

Joe and Yun shared a deep and enduring bond, grounded in mutual love, respect, and admiration. He was a source of joy, strength, comfort, and inspiration-a guardian presence whose impact will be felt always.
