I first really met Joe years ago when he invited me over for martinis with Kurt Kettenburg, and honestly, I was nervous, because I knew this was a test/initiation, they were both more experienced teachers, more in tune with the nuances of gin, better and more fluent conversationalists, and had been pals for decades. On the kitchen counter was a neon-light martini glass.
Of course, they were both gentlemen, funny, wise and generous - the next day at school I gave them both a photo of dozens of people, nude, bowing down before a huge oak tree, on which I superimposed a martini glass, with the caption, `I came, I saw, I bowed down´ - and it proved the start of a real friendship, which I have always treasured. Pam was my first principal and made me a better teacher; Joe made her laugh every day, and made me laugh every time I saw him. They hosted my wife and me many evenings over the years, memorable dinners of great food and great company, and I miss those times dearly. Thank you, Joe.

THE PHILOSOPHERS AND THE FISHERMAN
The philosophers and fishermen
The teachers and the Boss
Together for a time
So their friendship won´t be lost
Caring for the One´s who need
Support from those who care
Planning for the days to come
For all of them to share
Need of what does come today
It really doesn´t matter
Together is the purpose
For all of them to gather
With peaceful Love and caring
They´ll slowly drift away
To where they´ll be tomorrow
And love another day

Mr. Devlin was my swimming coach at Montgomery about 50 years ago. He was always kind and inspirational. He graciously gave his time to coach and support the swim team. I have fond memories of those days.

Mr Devlin was my teacher nearly 40 years ago. Things I still remember: He hated 7the graders; "alot" was a piece of land; he read two of my papers in class, even though I was an inconsistent student. While I dropped out of SRHS soon after, I ended up a college English teacher. Maybe he would have enjoyed the irony.

"What was Joe going to say?" His way of introducing his declining memory to his oldest friends from his childhood, was with humor. Thank you Joe for yet another lesson in life.

Ah Joe, I stepped i to your job at Santa Rosa High School mid-term when you transferred to Piner High to begin developing a small school community on campus with fellow enlightened teachers - Dick Latimer being a leading light. Needless to say, your shoes were big ones to fill. That was in 1982. Toward the end of that decade, you joined a trip I led to Cherkasy, Ukraine where we were beginning to establish Sister City relationships. That trip of ten adults and ten students was one of the highlights of my life and I think yours. You formed brotherly relationships with travel buddies and immersed yourself in Ukrainian culture. I know how deeply you loved the people. The following year you and Pam hosted Ukrainians on a reciprocal Sister City trip. In the years afterward we relived some outstanding memories in our conversations. I hold you in my heart Joe where your shared spirit and love live forever.
Oh, and my favorite drink is also a vodka martini "shaken not stirred" until a thin layer of ice appears on top. To you my Bonnie Lad!!
