Joseph R. DiMaio

Joseph R. DiMaio, 78, of Jamestown, died Monday November 17, 2025, in his home.
He was born February 17, 1947, in Jamestown, the son of the late Joseph M. and Catherine Cairns DiMaio.
He was a 1965 graduate of Jamestown High School and later earned degrees from Jamestown Community College and Brockport State University.
Joe was a proud US Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1968-69.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years by Jamestown Public School District as a health teacher. During his career he coached football at Lincoln Junior High School and Jamestown High School. Following retirement, he worked for Robo Enterprises servicing their Air Serve units. He was associated with his family's business, The Lite House and DiMaio Electric.
He was a man of many talents which he used throughout this community. He played softball and flag football, taught CPR for the American Red Cross, was on the board of the Chautauqua Sport Hall of Fame, served on and was president of the Jamestown School Board, and was active with the New York State Association of Small City School Districts.
His greatest achievement was that of husband, father, grandfather and friend. A wonderful supporter of any activity that involved his family, he was also a mentor and father figure to anyone who needed him. When his grandchildren came along, he was a shuttle service for them and all their friends.
Surviving are two children Joseph "Joey" (Sarah Stopyra) DiMaio, Jr of Leominster, MA and Sara (Richie) Joly of Jamestown; four grandchildren Cole and Peyton Joly and Madelyn and Cameron DiMaio and two sisters Vera DiMaio of Fountain Hills, AZ and Diane (George) Dodge of Phoenix, AZ.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Cheryl Carr DiMaio, whom he married June 23, 1973, and who died March 13, 2018.
Friends will be received from 3-7 pm Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Saturday on Strider Field. Please dress warmly to be outside and wear red and green to show your Raider Pride. Alumni of the JHS Football Program will be invited to form a tunnel as Coach DiMaio exits Strider Field one last time.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Joseph DiMaio Fund, c/o Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
