Joseph F. Elder passed away at age 90 after battling multiple illnesses. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Madeline Elder, and his brothers Thomas and Eddie. He lives on in the hearts of his children Jenni and Laurence and former wife Barbara with whom he remained close friends. He also leaves behind extended family, co-workers and friends who will miss him dearly.
Born on December 15th,1933 in New Britain, Connecticut, Joe loved learning from an early age and excelled in the arts. He attended acting school in New York City and obtained his undergraduate degree from Yale University. He enjoyed a long, successful career in publishing and a fruitful and deeply satisfying second career in social work.
In addition to his long list of professional accomplishments, Joe was also a published poet and accomplished pianist. He delved deeply into the culinary arts, and was known for having a green thumb and a special connection with nature and animals. He was a true "renaissance man," who continually reinvented himself and excelled in multiple disciplines and areas of knowledge.
At the age of sixty Joe made the bold move of obtaining his Master's in Social Work and embarking on a second career that revolved around helping the elderly. He continued in this field for nearly twenty years, changing countless lives for the better in the process. In this new chapter of his story, Joe had found his true calling as a compassionate listener and facilitator, helping others on the next steps of their life's journey.
Joe was nothing if not a great listener, and in his retirement, he continued to be that trusted sounding board for his family, colleagues and friends. He remained a valued member of the community, and in 2012 he was awarded a citation by the Binghamton Police Department for his integral involvement in the apprehension of a wanted fugitive. He continued to write poetry, play music, and enjoyed Sunday night dinners and crossword puzzles with his children.
Joseph's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and supporting staff at UHS Wilson Medical Center Emergency Room.
In lieu of sending flowers or cards, please consider planting a tree in Joe's honor.

I am saddened to read of your passing. Our friendship dates to the spring of 1988...those sunny days on South Street at St. Stephens. So many days have passed. I'll treasure always our visits in Binghamton...our forays into corners of Broome County hoping to snare a first edition or a rare classic. I won't forget. Farewell, Friend, and rest in peace.
