A Life of Service and Community
Joseph J. Grasso, a lifelong resident of Summit, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 6, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born and raised in Summit, New Jersey, Joe was deeply rooted in the community, known for his unwavering dedication to family, country, and neighbors. He was the son of the late Nicholas Grasso and Anna (née Coyle) Grasso.
A proud veteran, Joe served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Joe was drafted at the age of 19 and served his country from 1968 to 1970 with the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles). During his two tours in Vietnam, Joe received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, the New Jersey National Guard Distinguished Service Medal, among others. These honors highlight Joe's individual actions and those of his fellow soldiers for heroism and outstanding service during a conflict with an armed enemy. His courage and commitment to his fellow soldiers left a lasting impact, and he carried the values of service and sacrifice throughout his life.
After returning home, Joe devoted himself to building a life centered around integrity, kindness, and civic duty. Whether volunteering at local events, mentoring young people, or simply offering a helping hand, he was a familiar and beloved figure in Summit, NJ.
Joe was a career realtor able to share his love for the City of Summit by helping numerous individuals and families find homes. He was most recently associated with Keller Williams Realty, where he continued to work with the same honesty and professionalism that defined his career for more than five decades.
Joe loved fishing, spending time in Maine and Cape Cod, sports cars, and cooking. His legacy will live beyond the city streets he walked, the lives he touched, and the values he upheld.
Survived by his sister Sheila Duetsch and 13 loving nieces and nephews, who will remember him for his quiet strength, warm heart, and the stories he shared about a life well-lived. In addition to his parents, he was also pre-deceased by his brothers, Gaetano ("Ozzie"), Nicholas ("Babe"), and John Grasso.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on a later date to honor Joseph's memory.
