Joseph Peter Habermann
Joseph P. Habermann, age 94 of Herndon, VA passed away on February 27, 2025 surrounded
by family. Joseph, or Joe as he was best known to many, was a devoted husband to his late
wife, Martha, to whom he been married to for 70 years. He is survived by his four children,
seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother.
Born on July 26, 1930 in the Bronx Bourgh of New York City, New York, he liked to tell stories
about growing up in the South Bronx, just a few blocks from the original Yankee Stadium. After
briefly living in Stanford, CT, Joe resided for 35 years in North Salem, NY, later moved to
Campbell Hall, NY and in the late 80's moved to Hoopers Island, Fishing Creek, MD, where he
enjoyed a wonderful life on the Chesapeake Bay for the next 35 years. He moved to Virginia in
August 2022.
Seeing the humor in everyday life, his laugh was booming and infectious. Joe was an avid
reader and was particularly interested in World War II history. He traveled extensively
throughout the United States, as well as Internationally. Proficient in both the arts and sciences,
Joe was a "jack of all trades" and was able to solve problems with a laser focus; whether
rebuilding an automobile engine, building a house, or fixing any electrical or mechanical issue.
He enjoyed playing a number of instruments, especially the piano. While a high school student
he played base fiddle in NYC All City High School Orchestra. From an early age he enjoyed
drawing, which he continued throughout his life.
He enjoyed commuting to work on his BMW motorcycle, traveling the County by RV, hunting
and fishing. As an NRA instructor he taught many youths how to handle a gun safely.
Joe attended St. John's College of New York and the Institute of Applied Science and
Technology in New York where he specialized in emerging technologies to include polymers,
spectroscopy, and plastic resins.
During his professional life Joe worked for the American Cyanamid Corporation as a research
and product development chemist. He collaborated on teams developing bullet proof plastics,
rocket fuels, transition lenses, coating for cathode-ray (CRT) screens, biodegradable paper, non-
heat generating emergency lighting and many products we take for granted today. After
retirement he helped his wife run two continuing care communities in New York State.
