Joseph Frank Hartz III, 77, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, at the Carmel Home. Joseph was born in Owensboro on August 30, 1947, to the late Joseph Frank and Julia Maxine Hartz. An Owensboro Catholic High School graduate, Frank played football and went on to attend Auburn University on a football scholarship. After his college years, he worked for his father at Hartz Kirkpatrick Construction until the company was sold to Mellon Stuart Construction. Shortly thereafter, Frank and his brother Ben founded Hartz Construction Corporation, which they owned and operated for 32 years. Together, they constructed many of the iconic buildings in Owensboro and Daviess County, an achievement they both cherished. The brothers also co-owned ABC Rental Center.

Active in his community and profession, Frank served as a member of the state board of the Kentucky Association of Builders and Contractors. He also contributed his time to youth development as a Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club board member. Additionally, he was an active member of St. Stephen Cathedral and was deeply involved in the planning and construction of its restoration, which was completed in 2012. He took great pride in following the tradition of his great-grandfather and great-uncles, who performed the carpentry work for the original cathedral constructed in 1923.

Frank had a passion for hunting, golfing, and riding dirt bikes, and he was known to go on hunting expeditions abroad. He loved spending time with his family, especially during trips to Florida, where he enjoyed the beach. The time he spent with his family in Florida was particularly special to him. He also treasured family gatherings during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. Always laughing and joking, Frank constantly had a smile on his face. He cherished his Wednesday lunches at Dee's Diner with his friends. Above all, he was a great husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Lee Hartz.

Frank is survived by his loving wife, Janey Young Hartz; sons, Joseph Frank Hartz IV (Mandy) and Jason Hartz; grandsons, Seth and Preston Hartz; brother, Max Hartz (Patti); sister-in-law Pam Hartz and an extended, large, and loving family.

The funeral Mass for Joseph Frank Hartz III will be held at 12:00 pm Monday, October 21, 2024, at Saint Stephen Cathedral. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, with prayers at 5:00 pm and from 10:00 am until 11:30 am Monday at the funeral home.
