Joseph L. Heffernan of Plymouth, MA, formerly of Osterville, MA, passed away peacefully on May 24th 2025. He was the loving husband of Lorraine A. (Taylor) Heffernan of 57 years.
Born in Boston, he was the son of John F. and Ella (McDonough) Heffernan. He was predeceased by his two brothers John F. Heffernan and Thomas J. Heffernan.
Joe grew up on Wollaston, MA and graduated from North Quincy High School. He began his career at the Boston Gas Company at a young age and put himself through night school earning his degree from Northeastern University. He retired from Boston Gas in 1995 after 37 years of service.
Joe and Lorraine loved to spend time with their grandsons at Dowses Beach on Cape Cod. Joe was also an avid fan of baseball and golf. Ater retirement they split their time between their homes n Osterville, MA and Sarasota, FL.
In his most recent years Joe became a dedicated volunteer at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth and Beacon Hospice of Plymouth. He was a selfless and compassionate care giver to his family, friends and anyone in need.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jeanne Sumption and husband Al of Randolph and Joyce Lyne and husband Dan of Plymouth along with his four grandsons, Nicholas Lyne and wife McKenna of Charlotte, N.C., Brian Sumption of Randolph, Matthew Lyne of Plymouth and Casey Sumption of Randolph along with many extended family.
Joe has also survived through his network of friends over the years, those who helped him take care of Lorraine, the people he worked with at both the hospital and hospice and all of those from the parish he belonged to.
Services will be held Friday, June 6th at Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Manomet from 9:00 – 10:30 with a funeral mass to follow at St. Bonaventure Parish at 11:00.
Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Pine Street, Centerville, MA immediately following the mass.
Contributions in Joe's memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 32 Resnick Road, Suite 3, Plymouth, MA.
